      <verse number='1'>Now it came to <strongs number="1961">pass</strongs><strongs number="310">after</strongs><strongs number="3651">this</strongs>, that <strongs number="5176">Nahash</strongs>the <strongs number="4428">king</strongs>of the <strongs number="1121">children</strongs>of <strongs number="5983">Ammon</strongs><strongs number="4191">died</strongs>, and his <strongs number="1121">son</strongs><strongs number="4427">reigned</strongs>in his <strongs number="8478">stead</strongs>. </verse>
      <verse number='2'>And <strongs number="1732">David</strongs><strongs number="559">said</strongs>, I will <strongs number="6213">show</strongs><strongs number="2617">kindness</strongs><strongs number="5973">unto</strongs><strongs number="2586">Hanun</strongs>the <strongs number="1121">son</strongs>of <strongs number="5176">Nahash</strongs>, <strongs number="3588">because</strongs>his <strongs number="1">father</strongs><strongs number="6213">showed</strongs><strongs number="2617">kindness</strongs><strongs number="5973">to</strongs>me. And <strongs number="1732">David</strongs><strongs number="7971">sent</strongs><strongs number="4397">messengers</strongs>to <strongs number="5162">comfort</strongs>him <strongs number="5921">concerning</strongs>his <strongs number="1">father</strongs>. So the <strongs number="5650">servants</strongs>of <strongs number="1732">David</strongs><strongs number="935">came</strongs><strongs number="413">into</strongs>the <strongs number="776">land</strongs>of the <strongs number="1121">children</strongs>of <strongs number="5983">Ammon</strongs><strongs number="413">to</strongs><strongs number="2586">Hanun</strongs>, to <strongs number="5162">comfort</strongs>him. </verse>
      <verse number='3'>But the <strongs number="8269">princes</strongs>of the <strongs number="1121">children</strongs>of <strongs number="5983">Ammon</strongs><strongs number="559">said</strongs>to <strongs number="2586">Hanun</strongs>, <strongs number="5869">Thinkest</strongs>thou that <strongs number="1732">David</strongs>doth <strongs number="3513">honor</strongs><strongs number="*853"></strongs>thy <strongs number="1">father</strongs>, <strongs number="3588">that</strongs>he hath <strongs number="7971">sent</strongs><strongs number="5162">comforters</strongs>unto thee? are <strongs number="3808">not</strongs>his <strongs number="5650">servants</strongs><strongs number="935">come</strongs><strongs number="413">unto</strongs>thee <strongs number="5668">for</strongs>to <strongs number="2713">search</strongs>, and to <strongs number="2015">overthrow</strongs>, and to spy <strongs number="7270">out</strongs>the <strongs number="776">land</strongs>? </verse>
      <verse number='4'>Wherefore <strongs number="2586">Hanun</strongs><strongs number="3947">took</strongs><strongs number="*853"></strongs><strongs number="1732">David</strongs>'s <strongs number="5650">servants</strongs>, and <strongs number="1548">shaved</strongs>them, and cut <strongs number="3772">off</strongs><strongs number="*853"></strongs>their <strongs number="4063">garments</strongs>in the <strongs number="2677">midst</strongs>hard <strongs number="5704">by</strongs>their <strongs number="4667">buttocks</strongs>, and sent them <strongs number="7971">away</strongs>. </verse>
      <verse number='5'>Then there <strongs number="1980">went</strongs><em> certain </em>, and <strongs number="5046">told</strongs><strongs number="1732">David</strongs><strongs number="5921">how</strongs>the <strongs number="376">men</strongs>were served. And he <strongs number="7971">sent</strongs>to <strongs number="7125">meet</strongs>them: <strongs number="3588">for</strongs>the <strongs number="376">men</strongs><strongs number="1961">were</strongs><strongs number="3966">greatly</strongs><strongs number="3637">ashamed</strongs>. And the <strongs number="4428">king</strongs><strongs number="559">said</strongs>, <strongs number="3427">Tarry</strongs>at <strongs number="3405">Jericho</strongs><strongs number="5704 834">until</strongs>your <strongs number="2206">beards</strongs>be <strongs number="6779">grown</strongs>, and <em> then </em><strongs number="7725">return</strongs>. </verse>
      <verse number='6'>And when the <strongs number="1121">children</strongs>of <strongs number="5983">Ammon</strongs><strongs number="7200">saw</strongs><strongs number="3588">that</strongs>they had made themselves <strongs number="887">odious</strongs><strongs number="5973">to</strongs><strongs number="1732">David</strongs>, <strongs number="2586">Hanun</strongs>and the <strongs number="1121">children</strongs>of <strongs number="5983">Ammon</strongs><strongs number="7971">sent</strongs>a <strongs number="505">thousand</strongs><strongs number="3603">talents</strongs>of <strongs number="3701">silver</strongs>to <strongs number="7936">hire</strongs>them <strongs number="7393">chariots</strongs>and <strongs number="6571">horsemen</strongs>out <strongs number="4480">of</strongs><strongs number="763">Mesopotamia</strongs>, and out <strongs number="4480">of</strongs><strongs number="758 4601">Syria</strongs>-maachah, and out of <strongs number="4480 6678">Zobah</strongs>. </verse>
      <verse number='7'>So they <strongs number="7936">hired</strongs><strongs number="7970">thirty</strongs>and <strongs number="8147">two</strongs><strongs number="505">thousand</strongs><strongs number="7393">chariots</strongs>, and the <strongs number="4428">king</strongs>of <strongs number="4601">Maachah</strongs>and his <strongs number="5971">people</strongs>; who <strongs number="935">came</strongs>and <strongs number="2583">pitched</strongs><strongs number="6440">before</strongs><strongs number="4311">Medeba</strongs>. And the <strongs number="1121">children</strongs>of <strongs number="5983">Ammon</strongs>gathered themselves <strongs number="622">together</strongs>from their <strongs number="4480 5892">cities</strongs>, and <strongs number="935">came</strongs>to <strongs number="4421">battle</strongs>. </verse>
      <verse number='8'>And when <strongs number="1732">David</strongs><strongs number="8085">heard</strongs><em> of </em><em> it </em>, he <strongs number="7971">sent</strongs><strongs number="*853"></strongs><strongs number="3097">Joab</strongs>, and <strongs number="3605">all</strongs>the <strongs number="6635">host</strongs>of the mighty <strongs number="1368">men</strongs>. </verse>
      <verse number='9'>And the <strongs number="1121">children</strongs>of <strongs number="5983">Ammon</strongs>came <strongs number="3318">out</strongs>, and put the battle in <strongs number="6186 4421">array</strongs>before the <strongs number="6607">gate</strongs>of the <strongs number="5892">city</strongs>: and the <strongs number="4428">kings</strongs><strongs number="834">that</strongs>were <strongs number="935">come</strongs><em> were </em>by <strongs number="905">themselves</strongs>in the <strongs number="7704">field</strongs>. </verse>
      <verse number='10'>Now when <strongs number="3097">Joab</strongs><strongs number="7200">saw</strongs><strongs number="3588">that</strongs>the <strongs number="6440 4421">battle</strongs>was <strongs number="1961">set</strongs><strongs number="413">against</strongs>him <strongs number="6440">before</strongs>and <strongs number="268">behind</strongs>, he <strongs number="977">chose</strongs>out of <strongs number="4480 3605">all</strongs>the <strongs number="977">choice</strongs>of <strongs number="3478">Israel</strongs>, and put <em> them </em>in <strongs number="6186">array</strongs><strongs number="7125">against</strongs>the <strongs number="758">Syrians</strongs>. </verse>
      <verse number='11'>And the <strongs number="3499">rest</strongs>of the <strongs number="5971">people</strongs>he <strongs number="5414">delivered</strongs>unto the <strongs number="3027">hand</strongs>of <strongs number="52">Abishai</strongs>his <strongs number="251">brother</strongs>, and they set <em> themselves </em>in <strongs number="6186">array</strongs><strongs number="7125">against</strongs>the <strongs number="1121">children</strongs>of <strongs number="5983">Ammon</strongs>. </verse>
      <verse number='12'>And he <strongs number="559">said</strongs>, <strongs number="518">If</strongs>the <strongs number="758">Syrians</strongs>be too <strongs number="2388">strong</strongs><strongs number="4480">for</strongs>me, then thou shalt <strongs number="1961 8668">help</strongs>me: but <strongs number="518">if</strongs>the <strongs number="1121">children</strongs>of <strongs number="5983">Ammon</strongs>be too <strongs number="2388">strong</strongs><strongs number="4480">for</strongs>thee, then I will <strongs number="3467">help</strongs>thee. </verse>
      <verse number='13'>Be of good <strongs number="2388">courage</strongs>, and let us behave ourselves <strongs number="2388">valiantly</strongs><strongs number="1157">for</strongs>our <strongs number="5971">people</strongs>, and <strongs number="1157">for</strongs>the <strongs number="5892">cities</strongs>of our <strongs number="430">God</strongs>: and let the <strongs number="3068">LORD</strongs><strongs number="6213">do</strongs><em> that </em><em> which </em><em> is </em><strongs number="2896">good</strongs>in his <strongs number="5869">sight</strongs>. </verse>
      <verse number='14'>So <strongs number="3097">Joab</strongs>and the <strongs number="5971">people</strongs><strongs number="834">that</strongs><em> were </em><strongs number="5973">with</strongs>him drew <strongs number="5066">nigh</strongs><strongs number="6440">before</strongs>the <strongs number="758">Syrians</strongs>unto the <strongs number="4421">battle</strongs>; and they <strongs number="5127">fled</strongs><strongs number="4480 6440">before</strongs>him. </verse>
      <verse number='15'>And when the <strongs number="1121">children</strongs>of <strongs number="5983">Ammon</strongs><strongs number="7200">saw</strongs><strongs number="3588">that</strongs>the <strongs number="758">Syrians</strongs>were <strongs number="5127">fled</strongs>, <strongs number="1992">they</strongs><strongs number="1571">likewise</strongs><strongs number="5127">fled</strongs><strongs number="4480 6440">before</strongs><strongs number="52">Abishai</strongs>his <strongs number="251">brother</strongs>, and <strongs number="935">entered</strongs>into the <strongs number="5892">city</strongs>. Then <strongs number="3097">Joab</strongs><strongs number="935">came</strongs>to <strongs number="3389">Jerusalem</strongs>. </verse>
      <verse number='16'>And when the <strongs number="758">Syrians</strongs><strongs number="7200">saw</strongs><strongs number="3588">that</strongs>they were put to the <strongs number="5062">worse</strongs><strongs number="6440">before</strongs><strongs number="3478">Israel</strongs>, they <strongs number="7971">sent</strongs><strongs number="4397">messengers</strongs>, and drew <strongs number="3318">forth</strongs><strongs number="*853"></strongs>the <strongs number="758">Syrians</strongs><strongs number="834">that</strongs><em> were </em><strongs number="4480 5676">beyond</strongs>the <strongs number="5104">river</strongs>: and <strongs number="7780">Shophach</strongs>the <strongs number="8269">captain</strongs>of the <strongs number="6635">host</strongs>of <strongs number="1928">Hadarezer</strongs><em> went </em><strongs number="6440">before</strongs>them. </verse>
      <verse number='17'>And it was <strongs number="5046">told</strongs><strongs number="1732">David</strongs>; and he <strongs number="622">gathered</strongs><strongs number="*853"></strongs><strongs number="3605">all</strongs><strongs number="3478">Israel</strongs>, and passed <strongs number="5674">over</strongs><strongs number="3383">Jordan</strongs>, and <strongs number="935">came</strongs><strongs number="413">upon</strongs>them, and set <em> the battle </em>in <strongs number="6186 4421">array</strongs><strongs number="413">against</strongs>them. So when <strongs number="1732">David</strongs>had put the battle in <strongs number="6186">array</strongs><strongs number="7125">against</strongs>the <strongs number="758">Syrians</strongs>, they <strongs number="3898">fought</strongs><strongs number="5973">with</strongs>him. </verse>
      <verse number='18'>But the <strongs number="758">Syrians</strongs><strongs number="5127">fled</strongs><strongs number="4480 6440">before</strongs><strongs number="3478">Israel</strongs>; and <strongs number="1732">David</strongs><strongs number="2026">slew</strongs>of the <strongs number="4480 758">Syrians</strongs><strongs number="7651">seven</strongs><strongs number="505">thousand</strongs><em> men </em><em> which </em><em> fought </em><em> in </em><strongs number="7393">chariots</strongs>, and <strongs number="705">forty</strongs><strongs number="505">thousand</strongs><strongs number="376 7273">footmen</strongs>, and <strongs number="4191">killed</strongs><strongs number="7780">Shophach</strongs>the <strongs number="8269">captain</strongs>of the <strongs number="6635">host</strongs>. </verse>
      <verse number='19'>And when the <strongs number="5650">servants</strongs>of <strongs number="1928">Hadarezer</strongs><strongs number="7200">saw</strongs><strongs number="3588">that</strongs>they were put to the <strongs number="5062">worse</strongs><strongs number="6440">before</strongs><strongs number="3478">Israel</strongs>, they made <strongs number="7999">peace</strongs><strongs number="5973">with</strongs><strongs number="1732">David</strongs>, and became his <strongs number="5647">servants</strongs>: <strongs number="3808">neither</strongs><strongs number="14">would</strongs>the <strongs number="758">Syrians</strongs><strongs number="3467">help</strongs><strongs number="*853"></strongs>the <strongs number="1121">children</strongs>of <strongs number="5983">Ammon</strongs>any <strongs number="5750">more</strongs>. </verse>
