And it came to pass, whenSamuelwas old, that he madehis sonsjudgesover Israel. Now the nameof his firstbornwasJoel; and the nameof his second, Abiah: they were judgesin Beer-sheba. And his sonswalkednotin his ways, but turned asideafterlucre, and tookbribes, and pervertedjudgment. Then allthe eldersof Israelgathered themselves together, and cametoSamuelunto Ramah, And saiduntohim, Behold, thouart old, and thy sonswalknotin thy ways: nowmakeus a kingto judgeus like allthe nations. But the thingdispleasedSamuel, whenthey said, Giveus a kingto judgeus. And Samuelprayeduntothe LORD. And the LORDsaiduntoSamuel, Hearkenunto the voiceof the peoplein allthatthey sayuntothee: forthey have notrejectedthee, butthey have rejectedme, that I should not reignoverthem. According to allthe workswhichthey have donesince the daythat I brought them upout of Egypteven untothisday, wherewith they have forsakenme, and servedothergods, sodotheyalsounto thee. Nowtherefore hearkenunto their voice: howbeityetprotest solemnlyunto them, and showthem the mannerof the kingthatshall reignoverthem. And Samueltoldallthe wordsof the LORDuntothe peoplethat askedofhim a king. And he said, Thiswill bethe mannerof the kingthatshall reignoveryou: He will takeyour sons, and appoint them for himself, for his chariots, and to be his horsemen; and some shall runbeforehis chariots. And he will appointhim captainsover thousands, and captainsover fifties; and will set them to earhis ground, and to reaphis harvest, and to makehis instrumentsof war, and instrumentsof his chariots. And he will takeyour daughters to be confectionaries, and to be cooks, and to be bakers. And he will takeyour fields, and your vineyards, and your oliveyards, even the best of them , and give them to his servants. And he will take the tenthof your seed, and of your vineyards, and giveto his officers, and to his servants. And he will takeyour menservants, and your maidservants, and your goodliestyoung men, and your asses, and put them to his work. He will take the tenthof your sheep: and yeshall behis servants. And ye shall cry outin thatdaybecauseof your kingwhichye shall have chosenyou; and the LORDwill nothearyou in thatday. Nevertheless the peoplerefusedto obeythe voiceof Samuel; and they said, Nay; butwe will havea kingoverus; That wealsomay belike allthe nations; and that our kingmay judgeus, and go outbeforeus, and fightour battles. And Samuelheardallthe wordsof the people, and he rehearsedthem in the earsof the LORD. And the LORDsaidtoSamuel, Hearkenunto their voice, and make them a king. And Samuelsaiduntothe menof Israel, Goye every manunto his city.
