Let us fetchthe arkof the covenantof the LORDout of Shilohuntous, that, when it comethamongus, it may saveus out of the handof our enemies. So the peoplesentto Shiloh, that they might bringfrom thencethe arkof the covenantof the LORDof hosts, which dwelleth between the cherubims: and the twosonsof Eli, Hophniand Phinehas, were therewiththe arkof the covenantof God. And when he came, lo, Elisatupona seatby the waysidewatching: forhis hearttrembledforthe arkof God. And when the mancameinto the city, and told it , allthe citycried out. And when Eliheardthe noiseof the crying, he said, What meaneth the noiseof thistumult? And the mancamein hastily, and toldEli. Now Eliwas ninetyand eightyearsold; and his eyeswere dim, that he couldnotsee. And the mansaiduntoEli, I am he that cameout ofthe army, and Ifledtodayout ofthe army. And he said, Whatisthere done, my son? And the messengeransweredand said, Israelis fledbeforethe Philistines, and there hath beenalsoa greatslaughteramong the people, and thy twosonsalso, Hophniand Phinehas, are dead, and the arkof Godis taken. And it came to pass, when he made mentionof the arkof God, that he fellfrom offthe seatbackwardbythe sideof the gate, and his neckbroke, and he died: forhe was an oldman, and heavy. And hehad judgedIsraelfortyyears. And his daughter-in-law, Phinehas' wife, was with child, near to be delivered: and when she heardthe tidingsthat the arkof Godwas taken, and that her father-in-law and her husbandwere dead, she bowed herselfand travailed; forher painscameuponher. And about the timeof her deaththe women that stoodby her saiduntoher, Fearnot; forthou hast borna son. But she answerednot, neitherdid she regard it . And she namedthe childIchabod, saying, The gloryis departedfrom Israel: becausethe arkof Godwas taken, and becauseof her father-in-law and her husband. And she said, The gloryis departedfrom Israel: forthe arkof Godis taken.
