And Davidfledfrom Naiothin Ramah, and cameand saidbeforeJonathan, Whathave I done? what is mine iniquity? and what is my sinbeforethy father, thathe seekethmy life? And he saidunto him, God forbid; thou shalt notdie: behold, my fatherwill donothingeither greatorsmall, but that he will showit me: and whyshould my fatherhidethisthingfromme? it is not so . And Davidsworemoreover, and said, Thy fathercertainly knoweththatI have foundgracein thine eyes; and he saith, Let notJonathanknowthis, lesthe be grieved: but truly as the LORDliveth, and as thy soulliveth, there is but a stepbetweenme and death. Then saidJonathanuntoDavid, Whatsoeverthy souldesireth, I will even do it for thee. And DavidsaiduntoJonathan, Behold, tomorrow is the new moon, and Ishould not fail to sitwiththe kingat meat: but let me go, that I may hide myselfin the fielduntothe third day at even. Ifthy fatherat all missme, then say, Davidearnestly asked leave ofme that he might runto Bethlehemhis city: for there is a yearlysacrificetherefor allthe family. Ifhe saythus, It is well; thy servantshall have peace: but ifhe be very wroth, then be surethatevilis determinedbyhim. Therefore thou shalt dealkindlywiththy servant; forthou hast broughtthy servantinto a covenantof the LORDwiththee: notwithstanding, ifthere bein me iniquity, slayme thyself; forwhyshouldest thou bringme to thy father? And Jonathansaid, Far be itfrom thee: forifI knew certainlythatevilwere determinedbymy fatherto comeuponthee, then would notI tellit thee? Then saidDavidtoJonathan, Whoshall tellme? orwhat if thy fatheranswerthee roughly? And JonathansaiduntoDavid, Come, and let us go outinto the field. And they went outbothof them into the field. And JonathansaiduntoDavid, O LORDGodof Israel, whenI have soundedmy fatherabout tomorrowany time, or the third day , and, behold, if there be goodtowardDavid, and I thensendnotuntothee, and show it thee; The LORDdosoand muchmoreto Jonathan: but ifit pleasemy father to do thee evil, then I will show it thee, and send thee away, that thou mayest goin peace: and the LORDbewiththee, ashe hath beenwithmy father. And thou shalt notonly whileyetI liveshowme the kindnessof the LORD, that I dienot: But also thou shalt notcut offthy kindnessfrommy houseforever: no, notwhen the LORDhath cut offthe enemiesof Davidevery onefrom the faceof the earth. So Jonathanmade a covenant withthe houseof David, saying , Let the LORDeven require it at the handof David's enemies. And Jonathancaused Davidto swearagain, because he lovedhim: forhe lovedhim as he lovedhis own soul. Then Jonathansaidto David, Tomorrow is the new moon: and thou shalt be missed, becausethy seatwill be empty. And when thou hast stayed three days, then thou shalt go downquickly, and cometothe placewherethou didst hide thyselfwhenthe businesswas in hand , and shalt remainbythe stoneEzel. And Iwill shootthreearrowson the side thereof , as though I shotat a mark. And, behold, I will senda lad, saying , Go, find outthe arrows. IfI expressly sayunto the lad, Behold, the arrows are on this sideof thee, takethem; then comethou: for there is peaceto thee, and nohurt; as the LORDliveth. But ifI saythusunto the young man, Behold, the arrows are beyondthee; go thy way: forthe LORDhath sent thee away. And as touching the matterwhichthouand Ihave spokenof, behold, the LORD be betweenthee and me forever. So Davidhid himselfin the field: and when the new moonwas come, the kingsat him downto eatmeat. And the kingsatuponhis seat, as at other times, even upona seatby the wall: and Jonathanarose, and Abnersatby Saul's side, and David's placewas empty. Nevertheless Saulspokenotany thingthatday: forhe thought, Something hath befallenhim, he is notclean; surelyhe is notclean. And it came to passon the morrow, which was the second day of the month, that David's placewas empty: and SaulsaiduntoJonathanhis son, Whereforecomethnotthe sonof Jessetomeat, neitheryesterday, nortoday? And JonathanansweredSaul, Davidearnestly asked leave ofme to go toBethlehem: And he said, Let me go, I pray thee; forour familyhath a sacrificein the city; and my brother, hehath commandedme to be there : and now, ifI have foundfavorin thine eyes, let me get away, I pray thee, and seemy brethren. Thereforehe comethnotuntothe king's table. Then Saul's angerwas kindledagainst Jonathan, and he saidunto him, Thou sonof the perverserebellious woman , do notI knowthatthouhast chosenthe sonof Jesseto thine own confusion, and unto the confusionof thy mother's nakedness? Foras longasthe sonof Jesselivethuponthe ground, thoushalt notbe established, nor thy kingdom. Wherefore nowsendand fetchhim untome, forheshall surely die. And JonathanansweredSaulhis father, and saiduntohim, Whereforeshall he be slain? whathath he done? And Saulcasta javelinathim to smitehim: whereby Jonathanknewthatitwas determinedofhis fatherto slayDavid. So Jonathanarosefromthe tablein fierceanger, and did eatnomeatthe seconddayof the month: forhe was grievedforDavid, becausehis fatherhad done him shame. And it came to passin the morning, that Jonathanwent outinto the fieldat the time appointedwith David, and a littleladwithhim. And he saidunto his lad, Run, find outnowthe arrowswhichIshoot. And as the ladran, heshotan arrowbeyondhim. And when the ladwas cometothe placeof the arrowwhichJonathanhad shot, Jonathancriedafterthe lad, and said, Is notthe arrowbeyondthee? And Jonathancriedafterthe lad, Make speed, haste, staynot. And Jonathan's ladgathered upthe arrows, and cametohis master. But the ladknewnotany thing: onlyJonathanand Davidknewthe matter. And Jonathangavehis artilleryuntohislad, and saidunto him, Go, carry them to the city. And as soon as the ladwas gone, Davidaroseout of a place towardthe south, and fellon his faceto the ground, and bowed himselfthreetimes: and they kissedoneanother, and weptonewithanother, untilDavidexceeded. And Jonathansaidto David, Goin peace, forasmuch aswe have swornbothof usin the nameof the LORD, saying, The LORDbebetweenme and thee, and betweenmy seedand thy seedforever. And he aroseand departed: and Jonathanwentinto the city.
