And Jessesaidunto Davidhis son, Takenowfor thy brethrenan ephahof thisparched corn , and thesetenloaves, and runto the campto thy brethren; And carrythesetencheesesunto the captainof their thousand, and look howthy brethrenfare, and taketheir pledge. Now Saul, and they, and allthe menof Israel, were in the valleyof Elah, fightingwiththe Philistines. And Davidrose up earlyin the morning, and leftthe sheepwitha keeper, and took, and went, asJessehad commandedhim; and he cameto the trench, as the hostwas going forthtothe fight, and shoutedfor the battle. And Davidspoketothe menthat stoodbyhim, saying, Whatshall be doneto the manthatkilleththisPhilistine, and taketh awaythe reproachfromIsrael? forwho is thisuncircumcisedPhilistine, thathe should defythe armiesof the livingGod? And the peopleansweredhim after thismanner, saying, Soshall it be doneto the manthatkillethhim. And Eliabhis eldestbrotherheardwhen he spokeuntothe men; and Eliab's angerwas kindledagainst David, and he said, Whycamest thou downhither? and withwhomhast thou leftthosefewsheepin the wilderness? Iknowthy pride, and the naughtinessof thine heart; forthou art come downthatthou mightest seethe battle. And Davidsaid, Whathave I nowdone? Is there nota cause? And he turnedfromhim toward another, and spokeafter the samemanner: and the peopleansweredhim againafter the formermanner. And when the wordswere heardwhichDavidspoke, they rehearsed them beforeSaul: and he sentfor him. And DavidsaidtoSaul, Let noman's heartfailbecauseof him; thy servantwill goand fightwiththisPhilistine. And SaulsaidtoDavid, Thou art notableto goagainstthisPhilistineto fightwithhim: forthou art but a youth, and hea manof warfrom his youth. And DavidsaiduntoSaul, Thy servantkepthis father's sheep, and there camea lion, and a bear, and tooka lambout of the flock: And I went outafterhim, and smotehim, and delivered it out of his mouth: and when he aroseagainstme, I caught him by his beard, and smotehim, and slewhim. Thy servantslewboththe lionandthe bear: and thisuncircumcisedPhilistineshall beas oneofthem, seeinghe hath defiedthe armiesof the livingGod. Davidsaidmoreover, The LORDthatdeliveredme out of the pawof the lion, and out of the pawof the bear, hewill deliverme out of the handof thisPhilistine. And SaulsaiduntoDavid, Go, and the LORDbewiththee. And SaularmedDavidwith his armor, and he puta helmetof brassuponhis head; also he armedhim with a coat of mail. And Davidgirdedhis sworduponhis armor, and he attemptedto go; forhe had notproved it . And DavidsaiduntoSaul, I cannotgowith these; forI have notproved them . And Davidputthem offhim. And he tookhis staffin his hand, and chosehim fivesmoothstonesout ofthe brook, and putthem in a shepherd's bagwhichhe had, even in a scrip; and his sling was in his hand: and he drew neartothe Philistine. And the Philistinecameonand drew nearuntoDavid; and the manthat borethe shield went beforehim. And when the Philistinelooked about, and sawDavid, he disdainedhim: forhe was but a youth, and ruddy, and ofa faircountenance. And the PhilistinesaiduntoDavid, Am Ia dog, thatthoucomesttome with staves? And the PhilistinecursedDavidby his gods. And the PhilistinesaidtoDavid, Cometome, and I will givethy fleshunto the fowlsof the air, and to the beastsof the field. Then saidDavidtothe Philistine, Thoucomesttome with a sword, and with a spear, and with a shield: but Icometothee in the nameof the LORDof hosts, the Godof the armiesof Israel, whomthou hast defied. Thisdaywill the LORDdeliverthee into mine hand; and I will smitethee, and takethine headfromthee; and I will givethe carcassesof the hostof the Philistinesthisdayunto the fowlsof the air, and to the wild beastsof the earth; that allthe earthmay knowthatthere isa Godin Israel.
