And he had twowives; the nameof the one was Hannah, and the nameof the otherPeninnah: and Peninnahhadchildren, but Hannahhad nochildren. And thismanwent upout of his cityyearlyto worshipand to sacrificeunto the LORDof hostsin Shiloh. And the twosonsof Eli, Hophniand Phinehas, the priestsof the LORD, were there. And when the timewasthat Elkanahoffered, he gaveto Peninnahhis wife, and to allher sonsand her daughters, portions: But unto Hannahhe gaveaworthyportion; forhe lovedHannah: but the LORDhad shut upher womb. And her adversaryalsoprovokedher sore, for tomake her fret, becausethe LORDhad shut upher womb. And as he didsoyearby year, whenshe went upto the houseof the LORD, soshe provokedher; therefore she wept, and did noteat. Then saidElkanahher husbandto her, Hannah, whyweepestthou? and whyeatestthou not? and whyis thy heartgrieved? am notIbetterto thee than tensons? So Hannahrose upafterthey had eatenin Shiloh, and afterthey had drunk. Now Elithe priestsatupona seatbya postof the templeof the LORD. And she was in bitternessof soul, and prayeduntothe LORD, and wept sore. And she voweda vow, and said, O LORDof hosts, ifthou wilt indeed lookon the afflictionof thine handmaid, and rememberme, and notforgetthine handmaid, but wilt giveunto thine handmaida manchild, then I will givehim unto the LORDallthe daysof his life, and there shall norazorcomeuponhis head. And it came to pass, asshe continuedprayingbeforethe LORD, that Elimarkedher mouth. Now Hannah, shespokeinher heart; onlyher lipsmoved, but her voicewas notheard: therefore Elithoughtshe had been drunken. And Elisaiduntoher, Howlongwilt thou be drunken? put awaythy winefromthee. And Hannahansweredand said, No, my lord, I am a womanof a sorrowfulspirit: Ihave drunkneitherwinenor strong drink, but have poured outmy soulbeforethe LORD. Countnotthine handmaidfora daughter of Belial: forout of the abundanceof my complaintand griefhave I spokenhitherto. Then Eliansweredand said, Goin peace: and the Godof Israelgrant thee thy petitionthatthou hast askedofhim. And she said, Let thine handmaidfindgracein thy sight. So the womanwenther way, and did eat, and her countenancewasnomore sad . And they rose up in the morning early, and worshipedbeforethe LORD, and returned, and cametotheir houseto Ramah: and ElkanahknewHannahhis wife; and the LORDrememberedher. Wherefore it came to pass, when the timewas comeabout after Hannahhad conceived, that she borea son, and calledhis nameSamuel, saying , BecauseI have askedhim of the LORD. And the manElkanah, and allhis house, went upto offerunto the LORDthe yearlysacrifice, and his vow. But Hannahwent not up; forshe saidunto her husband, I will not go up untilthe childbe weaned, and then I will bringhim, that he may appearbeforethe LORD, and thereabideforever. And Elkanahher husbandsaidunto her, Dowhat seemeththee good; tarryuntilthou have weanedhim; onlythe LORDestablishhis word. So the womanabode, and gave her son suckuntilshe weanedhim. And whenshe had weanedhim, she took him upwithher, with threebullocks, and oneephahof flour, and a bottleof wine, and broughthim unto the houseof the LORDin Shiloh: and the child was young. And they slewa bullock, and broughtthe childtoEli. And she said, Ohmy lord, as thy soulliveth, my lord, I am the womanthat stoodbythee here, prayinguntothe LORD. ForthischildI prayed; and the LORDhath givenme my petitionwhichI askedofhim: Therefore alsoIhave lenthim to the LORD; as longashe livethheshall belentto the LORD. And he worshipedthe LORDthere.
