Then Joshuacalledthe twelvemen, whomhe had preparedof the childrenof Israel, out of every tribe a man: And Joshuasaidunto them, Pass overbeforethe arkof the LORDyour Godintothe midstof Jordan, and take ye upevery manof you astoneuponhis shoulder, according unto the numberof the tribesof the childrenof Israel: Thatthismay bea signamongyou, that whenyour childrenask their fathers in time to come, saying, What mean ye by thesestones? Then ye shall answerthem, Thatthe watersof Jordanwere cut offbeforethe arkof the covenantof the LORD; when it passed overJordan, the watersof Jordanwere cut off: and thesestonesshall befor a memorialunto the childrenof Israelforever. And the childrenof IsraeldidsoasJoshuacommanded, and took uptwelvestonesout of the midstof Jordan, asthe LORDspokeuntoJoshua, according to the numberof the tribesof the childrenof Israel, and carried them overwiththem untothe place where they lodged, and laid them downthere. And Joshuaset uptwelvestonesin the midstof Jordan, in the placewhere the feetof the priestswhich borethe arkof the covenantstood: and they arethereuntothisday. For the priestswhich borethe arkstoodin the midstof Jordan, untilevery thingwas finishedthatthe LORDcommandedJoshuato speakuntothe people, according to allthatMosescommandedJoshua: and the peoplehastedand passed over. And it came to pass, whenallthe peoplewere cleanpassed over, that the arkof the LORDpassed over, and the priests, in the presenceof the people. And the childrenof Reuben, and the childrenof Gad, and halfthe tribeof Manasseh, passed overarmedbeforethe childrenof Israel, asMosesspokeuntothem: About fortythousandpreparedfor warpassed overbeforethe LORDunto battle, tothe plainsof Jericho. On thatdaythe LORDmagnifiedJoshuain the sightof allIsrael; and they fearedhim, asthey fearedMoses, allthe daysof his life. And the LORDspokeuntoJoshua, saying, Commandthe prieststhat bearthe arkof the testimony, that they come upout ofJordan. Joshuatherefore commandedthe priests, saying, Come ye upout ofJordan. And it came to pass, when the prieststhat borethe arkof the covenantof the LORDwere come upout of the midstof Jordan, and the solesof the priests' feetwere lifted upuntothe dry land, that the watersof Jordanreturnedunto their place, and flowedoverallhis banks, as they did before. And the peoplecame upout ofJordanon the tenth day of the firstmonth, and encampedin Gilgal, in the eastborderof Jericho. And thosetwelvestones, whichthey tookout ofJordan, did Joshuapitchin Gilgal. And he spokeuntothe childrenof Israel, saying, Whenyour childrenshall asktheir fathersin time to come, saying, What mean thesestones? Then ye shall let your childrenknow, saying, Israelcame overthisJordanon dry land. Forthe LORDyour Goddried upthe watersof Jordanfrom beforeyou, untilye were passed over, asthe LORDyour Goddidto the Redsea, whichhe dried upfrom beforeus, untilwe were gone over: Thatallthe peopleof the earthmight knowthe handof the LORD, thatit is mighty: thatye might fearthe LORDyour Godforever.
