There wasalso a lotfor the tribeof Manasseh; forhe was the firstbornof Joseph; to wit , for Machirthe firstbornof Manasseh, the fatherof Gilead: becausehewasa manof war, therefore he hadGileadand Bashan. There wasalso a lot for the restof the childrenof Manassehby their families; for the childrenof Abiezer, and for the childrenof Helek, and for the childrenof Asriel, and for the childrenof Shechem, and for the childrenof Hepher, and for the childrenof Shemida: these were the malechildrenof Manassehthe sonof Josephby their families. But Zelophehad, the sonof Hepher, the sonof Gilead, the sonof Machir, the sonof Manasseh, hadnosons, butdaughters: and these are the namesof his daughters, Mahlah, and Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah. And they came nearbeforeEleazarthe priest, and beforeJoshuathe sonof Nun, and beforethe princes, saying, The LORDcommandedMosesto giveus an inheritanceamongour brethren. Therefore accordingto the commandmentof the LORDhe gavethem an inheritanceamongthe brethrenof their father. And there felltenportionsto Manasseh, besidethe landof Gileadand Bashan, which were on the other sideJordan; Becausethe daughtersof Manassehhad an inheritanceamonghis sons: and the restof Manasseh's sonshadthe landof Gilead. And the coastof Manassehwasfrom Asherto Michmethah, that lieth beforeShechem; and the borderwent alongonthe right handuntothe inhabitantsof En-tappuah. Now Manassehhadthe landof Tappuah: but Tappuahonthe borderof Manasseh belonged to the childrenof Ephraim; And the coastdescendedunto the riverKanah, southwardof the river: thesecitiesof Ephraim are amongthe citiesof Manasseh: the coastof Manassehalso was on the north sideof the river, and the outgoingsof it wereat the sea: Southward it was Ephraim's, and northward it was Manasseh's, and the seaishis border; and they met togetherin Asheron the north, and in Issacharon the east. And Manassehhadin Issacharand in AsherBeth-shean and her towns, and Ibleamand her towns, and the inhabitantsof Dorand her towns, and the inhabitantsof Endorand her towns, and the inhabitantsof Taanachand her towns, and the inhabitantsof Megiddoand her towns, even threecountries. Yet the childrenof Manassehcouldnotdrive out the inhabitants of thosecities; but the Canaaniteswoulddwellin thatland. Yet it came to pass, whenthe childrenof Israelwere waxen strong, that they putthe Canaanitesto tribute; but did notutterly drive them out. And the childrenof JosephspokeuntoJoshua, saying, Whyhast thou givenme but onelotand oneportionto inherit, seeing I am a greatpeople, forasmuchas the LORDhath blessedme hitherto? And Joshuaansweredthem, Ifthou be a greatpeople, then get thee upto the wood country , and cut downfor thyself therein the landof the Perizzitesand of the giants, ifmountEphraimbe too narrowfor thee. And the childrenof Josephsaid, The hillis notenoughfor us: and allthe Canaanitesthat dwellin the landof the valleyhave chariotsof iron, both they who are of Beth-shean and her towns, and they who are of the valleyof Jezreel. And Joshuaspokeuntothe houseof Joseph, even to Ephraimand to Manasseh, saying, Thou art a greatpeople, and hast greatpower: thou shalt nothaveonelot only : Butthe mountainshall bethine; forit is a wood, and thou shalt cut it down: and the outgoingsof it shall bethine: forthou shalt drive outthe Canaanites, thoughthey have ironchariots, and thoughthey be strong.
