Mybrethren, benotmanymasters, knowingthatwe shall receivethe greatercondemnation. Forin many thingswe offendall. If any manoffendnotinword, the same is a perfectman, and ablealsoto bridlethewholebody. Behold, we putbitsinthehorses' mouths, that theymay obeyus; andwe turn abouttheirwholebody. Beholdalsotheships, which though they beso great, and are drivenoffiercewinds, yet are they turned aboutwitha very smallhelm, whithersoeverthegovernorlisteth. Evensothetongueisa littlemember, andboasteth great things. Behold, how greata mattera littlefirekindleth! Andthetongue is a fire, a worldof iniquity; soisthetongueamongourmembers, that it defileththewholebody, andsetteth on firethecourseof nature; andit is set on fireofhell. Foreverykindof beasts, andof birds, andof serpents, andof things in the sea, is tamed, andhath been tamedof mankind: Butthetonguecannomantame; it is an unrulyevil, fullof deadlypoison. Therewithblesswe God, eventhe Father; andtherewithcursewe men, which are madeafterthe similitudeof God. Outof thesamemouthproceedethblessingandcursing. Mybrethren, these thingsoughtnotsoto be. Dotha fountainsend forthatthesameplacesweet water andbitter? Canthe fig tree, mybrethren, bearolive berries? eithera vine, figs? so can nofountainboth yieldsaltwaterandfresh. Who is a wise manandendued with knowledgeamongyou? let him showout ofa goodconversationhisworkswithmeeknessof wisdom. Butifye havebitterenvyingandstrifeinyourhearts, glorynot, andlienot againstthetruth. Thiswisdomdescendethnotfrom above, but is earthly, sensual, devilish. Forwhereenvyingandstrife is, there is confusionandeveryevilwork. Butthewisdomthat is from aboveisfirstpure, thenpeaceable, gentle, and easy to be entreated, fullof mercyandgoodfruits, without partiality, andwithout hypocrisy. Andthe fruitof righteousnessis sowninpeaceof themthat makepeace.
