And it shall be, when ye are come nighuntothe battle, that the priestshall approachand speakuntothe people, And shall sayuntothem, Hear, O Israel, yeapproachthis dayunto battleagainstyour enemies: let notyour heartsfaint, fearnot, and do nottremble, neitherbe ye terrifiedbecause ofthem; Forthe LORDyour God is he that goethwithyou, to fightfor you againstyour enemies, to saveyou. And the officersshall speakuntothe people, saying, Whatman is there thathath builta newhouse, and hath notdedicatedit? let him goand returnto his house, lesthe diein the battle, and anothermandedicateit. And whatman is he thathath planteda vineyard, and hath not yet eatenof it? let him also goand returnunto his house, lesthe diein the battle, and anothermaneatof it. And whatman is there thathath betrotheda wife, and hath nottakenher? let him goand returnunto his house, lesthe diein the battle, and anothermantakeher. And the officersshall speakfurtheruntothe people, and they shall say, Whatman is there that is fearfuland fainthearted? let him goand returnunto his house, lesthis brethren's heartfaintas well as his heart. And it shall be, when the officershave made an endof speakinguntothe people, that they shall makecaptainsof the armiesto leadthe people. Whenthou comest nighuntoa cityto fightagainstit, then proclaimpeaceuntoit. And it shall be, ifit make thee answerof peace, and openunto thee, then it shall be, that allthe people that is foundtherein shall betributariesunto thee, and they shall servethee. And ifit will make no peacewiththee, but will makewaragainstthee, then thou shalt besiegeit: And when the LORDthy Godhath deliveredit into thine hands, thou shalt smiteeverymalethereof with the edgeof the sword: Butthe women, and the little ones, and the cattle, and allthatisin the city, even allthe spoilthereof, shalt thou takeunto thyself; and thou shalt eatthe spoilof thine enemies, whichthe LORDthy Godhath giventhee. Thusshalt thou dounto allthe cities which are veryfar offfromthee, which are notof the citiesof thesenations. Butof the citiesof thesepeople, whichthe LORDthy Goddoth givethee for an inheritance, thou shalt save alivenothingthat breatheth: Butthou shalt utterly destroythem; namely , the Hittites, and the Amorites, the Canaanites, and the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites; asthe LORDthy Godhath commandedthee: Thatthey teachyou notto doafter alltheir abominations, whichthey have doneunto their gods; so should ye sinagainst the LORDyour God. Whenthou shalt besiegea citya longtime, in making waragainstit to takeit, thou shalt notdestroythe treesthereof by forcingan axeagainstthem: forthou mayest eatofthem, and thou shalt notcut them down( forthe treeof the field is man's life ) to employ them in the siege: Onlythe treeswhichthou knowestthatthey be nottreesfor meat, thou shalt destroyand cut them down; and thou shalt buildbulwarksagainstthe citythatmakethwarwiththee, untilit be subdued.
