These be the wordswhichMosesspokeuntoallIsraelon this sideJordanin the wilderness, in the plainover againstthe Red sea , betweenParan, and Tophel, and Laban, and Hazeroth, and Dizahab. ( There are elevendays journey from Horebby the wayof mountSeiruntoKadesh-barnea.) And it came to passin the fortiethyear, in the eleventhmonth, on the first day of the month, that Mosesspokeuntothe childrenof Israel, according unto allthatthe LORDhad given him in commandmentuntothem; Afterhe had slainSihonthe kingof the Amorites, whichdweltin Heshbon, and Ogthe kingof Bashan, whichdweltat Astarothin Edrei: On this sideJordan, in the landof Moab, beganMosesto declarethislaw, saying, The LORDour Godspokeuntous in Horeb, saying, Ye have dweltlong enoughin thismount: Turnyou, and take your journey, and goto the mountof the Amorites, and untoall the places nighthereunto, in the plain, in the hills, and in the vale, and in the south, and by the seaside, to the landof the Canaanites, and unto Lebanon, untothe greatriver, the riverEuphrates. Behold, I have setthe landbeforeyou: go inand possessthe landwhichthe LORDsworeunto your fathers, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, to giveunto them and to their seedafterthem. And I spokeuntoyou at thattime, saying, I am not ableto bearyou myself alone: The LORDyour Godhath multipliedyou, and, behold, ye are this dayas the starsof heavenfor multitude. (The LORDGodof your fathersmake you a thousandtimesso many moreas ye are , and blessyou, ashe hath promisedyou!) Howcan I myself alonebearyour encumbrance, and your burden, and your strife? Takeyou wisemen, and understanding, and knownamong your tribes, and I will makethem rulersover you. And ye answeredme, and said, The thingwhichthou hast spoken is good for us to do. So I tookthe chiefof your tribes, wisemen, and known, and madethem headsoveryou, captainsover thousands, and captainsover hundreds, and captainsover fifties, and captainsover tens, and officersamong your tribes. And I chargedyour judgesat thattime, saying, Hear the causes betweenyour brethren, and judgerighteouslybetween every manand his brother, and the stranger that is with him. Ye shall notrespectpersonsin judgment; but ye shall hearthe smallas well as the great; ye shall notbe afraidof the faceof man; forthe judgment is God's: and the causethatis too hardforyou, bring it untome, and I will hearit. And I commandedyou at thattimeallthe thingswhichye should do. And when we departedfrom Horeb, we went throughallthatgreatand terriblewilderness, whichye sawby the wayof the mountainof the Amorites, asthe LORDour Godcommandedus; and we cametoKadesh-barnea. And I saiduntoyou, Ye are comeuntothe mountainof the Amorites, whichthe LORDour Goddoth giveunto us. Behold, the LORDthy Godhath setthe landbeforethee: go up and possess it , asthe LORDGodof thy fathershath saidunto thee; fearnot, neitherbe discouraged. And ye came nearuntome every oneof you, and said, We will sendmenbeforeus, and they shall search us outthe land, and bringus wordagain by whatwaywe must go up, andintowhatcitieswe shall come. And the sayingpleased me well: and I tooktwelvemenofyou, oneof a tribe: And they turnedand went upinto the mountain, and cameuntothe valleyof Eshcol, and searched it out. And they tookof the fruitof the landin their hands, and brought it downuntous, and broughtus wordagain, and said, It is a goodlandwhichthe LORDour Goddoth giveus. Notwithstanding ye wouldnotgo up, but rebelled againstthe commandmentof the LORDyour God: And ye murmuredin your tents, and said, Because the LORDhatedus, he hath brought us forthout of the landof Egypt, to deliverus into the handof the Amorites, to destroyus. Whithershall wego up? our brethrenhave discouragedour heart, saying, The people is greaterand tallerthanwe; the cities are greatand walledup to heaven; and moreoverwe have seenthe sonsof the Anakimsthere. Then I saiduntoyou, Dreadnot, neitherbe afraidofthem. The LORDyour Godwhich goethbeforeyou, heshall fightfor you, according to allthathe didforyou in Egyptbefore your eyes; And in the wilderness, wherethou hast seenhow thatthe LORDthy Godborethee, asa mandoth bearhis son, in allthe waythatye went, untilye cameintothisplace. Yet in thisthingye did notbelievethe LORDyour God, Who wentin the waybeforeyou, to search you outa placeto pitch your tents in , in fireby night, to showyou by whatwayye should go, and in a cloudby day. And the LORDheardthe voiceof your words, and was wroth, and swore, saying, Surelythere shall not oneof thesemenof thisevilgenerationseethat goodland, whichI sworeto giveunto your fathers, SaveCalebthe sonof Jephunneh; heshall seeit, and to him will I givethe landthathe hath troddenupon, and to his children, becausehe hath whollyfollowedthe LORD. Alsothe LORDwas angrywith me for your sakes, saying, Thoualsoshalt notgo inthither. But Joshuathe sonof Nun, which standethbeforethee, heshall go inthither: encouragehim: forheshall cause Israelto inheritit. Moreover your little ones, whichye saidshould bea prey, and your children, whichin that dayhad no knowledgebetween goodand evil, theyshall go inthither, and unto them will I giveit, and theyshall possessit. But as for you, turnyou, and take your journeyinto the wildernessby the wayof the Redsea. Then ye answeredand saiduntome, We have sinnedagainst the LORD, wewill go upand fight, according to allthatthe LORDour Godcommandedus. And when ye had girded onevery manhis weaponsof war, ye were readyto go upinto the hill. And the LORDsaiduntome, Sayunto them, Go not up, neitherfight; forI am notamongyou; lestye be smittenbeforeyour enemies. So I spokeuntoyou; and ye would nothear, but rebelled againstthe commandmentof the LORD, and went presumptuously upinto the hill. And the Amorites, which dweltin thatmountain, came outagainstyou, and chasedyou, asbeesdo, and destroyedyou in Seir, even untoHormah. And ye returnedand weptbeforethe LORD; but the LORDwould nothearkento your voice, norgive earuntoyou. So ye abodein Kadeshmanydays, according unto the daysthatye abode there .
