Follow aftercharity, anddesirespiritual gifts, butratherthatye may prophesy. Forhe that speakethin an unknown tonguespeakethnotunto men, butunto God: forno manunderstandeth him ; howbeitin the spirithe speakethmysteries. Buthe that prophesiethspeakethunto men to edification, andexhortation, andcomfort. He that speakethin an unknown tongueedifiethhimself; buthe that prophesiethedifieththe church. Iwouldthat yeallspakewith tongues, butratherthatye prophesied: forgreater is he that prophesieththanhe that speaketh, with tongues, excepthe interpret, thatthechurchmay receiveedifying. Now, brethren, ifI comeuntoyouspeakingwith tongues, whatshall I profityou, exceptI shall speakto youeitherbyrevelation, orbyknowledge, orbyprophesying, orbydoctrine? And eventhings without lifegivingsound, whetherpipeorharp, exceptthey giveadistinctionin thesounds, howshall it be knownwhat is pipedorharped? Forifthe trumpetgivean uncertainsound, whoshall preparehimself tothe battle? Solikewiseye, exceptye utterbythetonguewordseasy to be understood, howshall it be knownwhat is spoken? forye shall speakintothe air. There are, it may be, so manykindsof voicesinthe world, andnoneof them is without signification. ThereforeifI knownotthemeaningof thevoice, I shall beunto him that speaketha barbarian, andhe that speaketh shall be a barbarianuntome. Evensoye, forasmuch asye arezealousof spiritual gifts, seekthatye may exceltotheedifyingof thechurch. Whereforelet him that speakethin an unknown tonguepraythathe may interpret. ForifI prayin an unknown tongue, myspiritprayeth, butmyunderstandingisunfruitful. Whatisit then? I will praywith thespirit, andI will praywith theunderstandingalso: I will singwith thespirit, andI will singwith theunderstandingalso. Elsewhenthou shalt blesswith thespirit, howshall he that occupieththeroomof theunlearnedsayAmenatthygiving of thanks, seeinghe understandethnotwhatthou sayest? Forthouverilygivest thankswell, buttheotheris notedified. I thankmyGod, I speakwith tonguesmorethan yeall: Yetinthe churchI hadrather speakfivewordswithmyunderstanding, that by my voice I might teachothersalso, thanten thousandwordsinan unknown tongue. Brethren, benotchildrenin understanding: howbeitin malicebe ye children, butin understandingbemen. Inthelawit is written, With men of other tonguesandotherlipswill I speakunto thispeople; andyet for all thatwill they nothearme, saiththe Lord. Whereforetonguesarefora sign, notto them that believe, butto them that believe not: butprophesying serveth notfor them that believe not, butfor them which believe. Ifthereforethewholechurchbe come togetherintoone place, andallspeakwith tongues, andthere come in those that are unlearned, orunbelievers, will they notsaythatye are mad? Butifallprophesy, andthere come inonethat believeth not, or one unlearned, he is convincedofall, he is judgedofall: Andthusare thesecretsof hisheartmademanifest; andsofalling downon his facehe will worshipGod, and reportthatGodisinyouof a truth. Howisit then, brethren? whenye come together, every oneof youhatha psalm, hatha doctrine, hatha tongue, hatha revelation, hathan interpretation. Let all thingsbe doneuntoedifying. Ifany manspeakin an unknown tongue, let it be bytwo, orat themost by three, and that bycourse; andlet oneinterpret. Butifthere benointerpreter, let him keep silenceinthe church; andlet him speakto himself, andto God. Letthe prophetsspeaktwoorthree, andlet theotherjudge. If any thing be revealedto anotherthat sitteth by, let thefirsthold his peace. Forye mayallprophesyone by one, thatallmay learn, andallmay be comforted. Andthe spiritsof the prophetsare subjectto the prophets. ForGodisnot the author of confusion, butof peace, asinallchurchesof thesaints. Let yourwomenkeep silenceinthechurches: forit is notpermittedunto themto speak; but they are commanded to be under obedience, asalsosaiththelaw. Andifthey willlearnany thing, let them asktheirhusbandsathome: forit isa shamefor womento speakinthe church. What? camethewordof Godout fromyou? orcameit untoyouonly? If any manthink himselfto bea prophet, orspiritual, let him acknowledgethatthe things thatI writeunto youarethe commandmentsof theLord. Butifany manbe ignorant, let him be ignorant. Wherefore, brethren, covetto prophesy, andforbidnotto speakwith tongues. Let all thingsbe donedecentlyandinorder.
