Andit came to pass, that ononeof thosedays, as hetaughtthepeopleinthetemple, andpreached the gospel, thechief priestsandthescribescame upon him withtheelders, Andspakeuntohim, saying, Tellus, bywhatauthoritydoestthou these things? orwhoishe that gavetheethisauthority? Andhe answeredand saiduntothem, I will also askyouonething; andanswerme: Thebaptism of John, was it fromheaven, orofmen? Andtheyreasonedwiththemselves, saying, Ifwe shall say, Fromheaven; he will say, Whythenbelievedye himnot? Butand ifwe say, Ofmen; allthepeoplewill stoneus: forthey bepersuadedthat Johnwasa prophet. Andthey answered, that they could nottellwhence it was. AndJesussaidunto them, NeithertellIyoubywhatauthority I do these things. Thenbeganhe to speaktothepeoplethisparable; A certainmanplanted a vineyard, and let it forth to husbandmen, and went into a far country for a longtime. Andat the season he sent a servanttothehusbandmen, that they should givehimofthefruit of thevineyard: butthehusbandmenbeathim, and sent him awayempty. And again he sentanotherservant: andtheybeat him also, and entreated him shamefully, and sent him awayempty. And again he sent a third: andtheywoundedhim also, and cast him out. Thensaidthelord of thevineyard, What shall I do? I will sendmybelovedson: it may be they will reverence him when they seehim. But when thehusbandmensawhim, they reasonedamongthemselves, saying, Thisistheheir: come, let us killhim, thattheinheritance may beours. So they casthimout of thevineyard, and killed him. Whattherefore shall thelord of thevineyarddo unto them? He shall comeanddestroythesehusbandmen, and shall givethevineyard to others. Andwhen they heard it, they said, God forbid. Andhebeheldthem, and said, Whatisthisthen that is written, The stonewhichthebuildersrejected, the same is becomethehead of the corner? Whosoever shall falluponthatstone shall be broken; butonwhomsoever it shall fall, it will grind him to powder. Andthechief priestsandthescribesthe samehoursoughtto layhandsonhim; andthey fearedthepeople: forthey perceivedthathe had spokenthisparableagainstthem. Andthey watched him, and sent forthspies, which should feignthemselvesjust men, thatthey might take holdof hiswords, that so they might deliverhimunto thepowerandauthorityof thegovernor. Andthey askedhim, saying, Master, we knowthatthou sayestandteachestrightly, neitheracceptestthou the person of any, butteachestthewayof Godtruly: Is it lawfulfor usto givetributeunto Caesar, orno? Buthe perceivedtheircraftiness, and saiduntothem, Whytempt ye me? Showme a penny. Whoseimageandsuperscriptionhath it? Theyansweredand said, Caesar's. Andhesaidunto them, Rendertherefore unto Caesar the things which be Caesar's and unto God the things which be God's. Andthey couldnottake holdof hiswordsbeforethepeople: andthey marveledathisanswer, and held their peace. Thencameto him certainof theSadducees, which denythat there isanyresurrection: and they askedhim, Saying, Master, Moseswroteunto us, Ifany man's brotherdie, havinga wife, andhediewithout children, thathisbrothershould takehis wife, andraise upseedunto hisbrother. There werethereforesevenbrethren: andthefirsttooka wife, and diedwithout children. Andthesecondtookher to wife, andhediedchildless. Andthethirdtookher; andin like mannerthesevenalso: and they leftnochildren, anddied. Lastof allthewomandiedalso. Thereforeintheresurrectionwhosewifeof themis she? forsevenhadherto wife. AndJesusansweringsaidunto them, Thechildren of thisworldmarry, and are given in marriage: But they which shall be accounted worthy to obtainthatworld, andtheresurrectionfrom the dead, neithermarry, nor are given in marriage: Neithercan they die any more: for they are equal unto the angels; andare the children of God, being the children of theresurrection. Nowthatthedead are raised, evenMosesshowedatthebush, when he calleth the LordtheGod of Abraham, andtheGod of Isaac, andtheGod of Jacob. For he isnot a God of the dead, but of the living: foralllive unto him. Thencertainof thescribesansweringsaid, Master, thou hast wellsaid. Andafter that they durstnotaskhimany question at all. Andhe saiduntothem, Howsay they that ChristisDavid's son? AndDavidhimselfsaithin the book of Psalms, TheLordsaid unto myLord, Sit thou onmy right hand, Till I makethineenemiesthyfootstool. DavidthereforecallethhimLord, how is hethenhisson? Thenin the audienceof allthepeoplehe saidunto hisdisciples, Bewareofthescribes, which desire to walkin long robes, andlovegreetingsinthemarkets, and the highest seatsinthesynagogues, and the chief roomsatfeasts; Whichdevourwidows' houses, and for a show make long prayers: the same shall receivegreaterdamnation.
