And when kingAradthe Canaanite, which dweltin the south, heard tellthatIsraelcameby the wayof the spies; then he foughtagainst Israel, and took some ofthem prisoners. And Israelvoweda vowunto the LORD, and said, Ifthou wilt indeed deliverthispeopleinto my hand, then I will utterly destroytheir cities. And the LORDhearkenedto the voiceof Israel, and delivered upthe Canaanites; and they utterly destroyedthem and their cities: and he calledthe nameof the placeHormah. And they journeyedfrom mountHorby the wayof the Redsea, to compassthe landof Edom: and the soulof the peoplewas much discouragedbecause of the way. And the peoplespokeagainst God, and against Moses, Whereforehave ye brought us upout of Egyptto diein the wilderness? for there is nobread, neither is there any water; and our soulloatheththis lightbread. And the LORDsentfieryserpentsamong the people, and they bitthe people; and muchpeopleof Israeldied. Therefore the peoplecametoMoses, and said, We have sinned, forwe have spokenagainst the LORD, and against thee; prayuntothe LORD, that he take awaythe serpentsfromus. And Mosesprayedforthe people. And the LORDsaiduntoMoses, Makethee a fiery serpent, and setit upona pole: and it shall come to pass, that every onethat is bitten, when he looketh uponit, shall live. And Mosesmadea serpentof brass, and putit upona pole, and it came to pass, that ifa serpenthad bittenany man, when he beheldthe serpentof brass, he lived. And the childrenof Israelset forward, and pitchedin Oboth. And they journeyedfrom Oboth, and pitchedat Ije-abarim, in the wildernesswhich is beforeMoab, toward the sunrising. From thencethey removed, and pitchedin the valleyof Zared. From thencethey removed, and pitchedon the other sideof Arnon, which is in the wildernessthat cometh outof the coastsof the Amorites: forArnon is the borderof Moab, betweenMoaband the Amorites. Whereforeit is saidin the bookof the warsof the LORD, What he didin the Red sea, and in the brooksof Arnon, And at the streamof the brooksthatgoeth downto the dwellingof Ar, and liethupon the borderof Moab. And from thence they went to Beer: that is the wellwhereofthe LORDspokeunto Moses, Gather the people together, and I will givethem water. ThenIsraelsangthissong, Spring up, O well; singye unto it: The princesdiggedthe well, the noblesof the peoplediggedit, by the direction of the lawgiver, with their staves. And from the wilderness they went to Mattanah: And from Mattanahto Nahaliel: and from Nahalielto Bamoth: And from Bamoth in the valley, that is in the countryof Moab, to the topof Pisgah, which lookethtowardJeshimon. And IsraelsentmessengersuntoSihonkingof the Amorites, saying, Let me passthrough thy land: we will notturninto the fields, or into the vineyards; we will notdrink of the watersof the well: but we will go alongby the king's high way, untilwe be pastthy borders. And Sihonwould notsufferIsraelto passthrough his border: but Sihongathered all his people together, and went outagainstIsraelinto the wilderness: and he cameto Jahaz, and foughtagainst Israel. And Israelsmotehim with the edgeof the sword, and possessedhis landfrom ArnonuntoJabbok, even untothe childrenof Ammon: forthe borderof the childrenof Ammon was strong. And Israeltookallthesecities: and Israeldweltin allthe citiesof the Amorites, in Heshbon, and in allthe villagesthereof. ForHeshbon was the cityof Sihonthe kingof the Amorites, whohad foughtagainst the formerkingof Moab, and takenallhis landout of his hand, even untoArnon. Whereforethey that speak in proverbssay, Comeinto Heshbon, let the cityof Sihonbe builtand prepared: Forthere is a firegone outof Heshbon, a flamefrom the cityof Sihon: it hath consumedArof Moab, and the lordsof the high placesof Arnon. Woeto thee, Moab! thou art undone, O peopleof Chemosh: he hath givenhis sonsthat escaped, and his daughters, into captivityunto Sihonkingof the Amorites. We have shotat them; Heshbonis perishedeven untoDibon, and we have laid them wasteeven untoNophah, which reacheth untoMedeba. Thus Israeldweltin the landof the Amorites. And Mosessentto spy outJaazer, and they tookthe villagesthereof, and drove outthe Amoritesthat were there. And they turnedand went upby the wayof Bashan: and Ogthe kingof Bashanwent outagainstthem, he, and allhis people, to the battleat Edrei. And the LORDsaiduntoMoses, Fearhim not: forI have deliveredhim into thy hand, and allhis people, and his land; and thou shalt doto him asthou didstunto Sihonkingof the Amorites, whichdweltat Heshbon. So they smotehim, and his sons, and allhis people, untilthere was nonelefthim alive: and they possessedhis land.
