And allthe congregationlifted uptheir voice, and cried; and the peopleweptthatnight. And allthe childrenof IsraelmurmuredagainstMosesand againstAaron: and the wholecongregationsaiduntothem, Would God thatwe had diedin the landof Egypt! orwould Godwe had diedin thiswilderness! And whereforehath the LORDbroughtus untothisland, to fallby the sword, that our wivesand our childrenshould bea prey? were it notbetterfor us to returninto Egypt? And they saidonetoanother, Let us makea captain, and let us returninto Egypt. Then Mosesand Aaronfellontheir facesbeforeallthe assemblyof the congregationof the childrenof Israel. And Joshuathe sonof Nun, and Calebthe sonof Jephunneh, which were ofthem that searchedthe land, renttheir clothes: And they spokeuntoallthe companyof the childrenof Israel, saying, The land, whichwe passed throughto searchit, is an exceedinggoodland. Ifthe LORDdelightin us, then he will bringus intothisland, and giveit us; a landwhichflowethwith milkand honey. Onlyrebelnotye against the LORD, neitherfearyethe peopleof the land; forthey are breadfor us: their defenseis departedfromthem, and the LORD is withus: fearthem not. But allthe congregationbadestonethem with stones. And the gloryof the LORDappearedin the tabernacleof the congregationbeforeallthe childrenof Israel. And the LORDsaiduntoMoses, How longwill thispeopleprovokeme? and how longwill it be erethey believeme, for allthe signswhichI have showedamongthem? I will smitethem with the pestilence, and disinheritthem, and will makeof thee a greaternationand mightierthanthey. And Mosessaiduntothe LORD, Then the Egyptiansshall hear it , ( forthou broughtest upthispeoplein thy mightfrom amongthem;) And they will tell it tothe inhabitantsof thisland: for they have heardthatthouLORD art amongthispeople, thatthouLORDart seenfaceto face, and that thy cloudstandethoverthem, and that thougoestbeforethem, by day timein a pillarof a cloud, and in a pillarof fireby night. Now if thou shalt kill all thispeopleas oneman, then the nationswhichhave heardthe fameof thee will speak, saying, Becausethe LORDwas not ableto bringthispeopleintothe landwhichhe sworeunto them therefore he hath slainthem in the wilderness. And now, I beseech thee, let the powerof my Lordbe great, according asthou hast spoken, saying, The LORD is longsuffering, and of greatmercy, forgivinginiquityand transgression, and by no means clearing the guilty , visitingthe iniquityof the fathersuponthe childrenuntothe thirdand fourth generation . Pardon, I beseech thee, the iniquityof thispeopleaccording unto the greatnessof thy mercy, and asthou hast forgiventhispeople, from Egypteven untilnow. And the LORDsaid, I have pardonedaccording to thy word: But as truly as Ilive, allthe earthshall be filledwith the gloryof the LORD. Becauseallthose menwhich have seenmy glory, and my miracles, whichI didin Egyptand in the wilderness, and have temptedme now thesetentimes, and have nothearkenedto my voice; Surelythey shall not seethe landwhichI sworeunto their fathers, neithershall anyof them that provokedme seeit: But my servantCaleb, becausehe hadanotherspiritwithhim, and hath followed me fully, him will I bringintothe landwhereintohe went; and his seedshall possessit. (Now the Amalekitesand the Canaanitesdweltin the valley.) Tomorrowturnyou, and getyou into the wildernessby the wayof the Redsea. And the LORDspokeuntoMosesand untoAaronsaying, How long shall I bear with thisevilcongregation, whichmurmuragainstme? I have heardthe murmuringsof the childrenof Israel, whichtheymurmuragainstme. Sayuntothem, As truly as Ilive, saiththe LORD, asye have spokenin mine ears, sowill I doto you: Your carcassesshall fallin thiswilderness; and allthat were numberedof you, according to your wholenumber, from twentyyearsoldand upward, whichhave murmuredagainstme, Doubtlessyeshall not comeintothe land, concerning whichI sworeto make you dwelltherein, saveCalebthe sonof Jephunneh, and Joshuathe sonof Nun. But your little ones, whichye saidshould bea prey, them will I bring in, and they shall knowthe landwhichye have despised. But as for you, your carcasses, they shall fallin thiswilderness. And your childrenshall wanderin the wildernessfortyyears, and bearyour whoredoms, untilyour carcassesbe wastedin the wilderness. After the numberof the daysin whichye searchedthe land, even fortydays, each day for a year, shall ye bearyour iniquities, even fortyyears, and ye shall knowmy breach of promise. Ithe LORDhave said, I will surelydoitunto allthisevilcongregation, that are gathered togetheragainstme: in thiswildernessthey shall be consumed, and therethey shall die. And the men, whichMosessentto searchthe land, who returned, and made allthe congregationto murmuragainsthim, by bringing upa slanderuponthe land, Even those menthat did bring upthe evilreportupon the land, diedby the plaguebeforethe LORD. But Joshuathe sonof Nun, and Calebthe sonof Jephunneh, which were ofthe menthat wentto searchthe land, lived still . And Mosestoldthesesayingsuntoallthe childrenof Israel: and the peoplemournedgreatly. And they rose up earlyin the morning, and got them upintothe topof the mountain, saying, Lo, we be here , and will go upuntothe placewhichthe LORDhath promised: forwe have sinned. And Mosessaid, Whereforenowdo yetransgressthe commandmentof the LORD? but itshall notprosper. Go not up, forthe LORD is notamongyou; that ye be notsmittenbeforeyour enemies. Forthe Amalekitesand the Canaanites are therebeforeyou, and ye shall fallby the sword: becauseye are turned awayfromthe LORD, therefore the LORDwill notbewithyou. But they presumedto go upuntothe hilltop: nevertheless the arkof the covenantof the LORD, and Moses, departednotout ofthe camp. Then the Amalekitescame down, and the Canaaniteswhich dweltin thathill, and smotethem, and discomfitedthem, even untoHormah.
