WhenIsrael was a child, then I lovedhim, and calledmy sonout of Egypt. As they calledthem, sothey wentfromthem: they sacrificedunto Baalim, and burned incenseto graven images. Itaught Ephraim also to go, takingthem bytheir arms; but they knewnotthatI healedthem. I drewthem with cordsof a man, with bandsof love: and I wasto them as they that take offthe yokeontheir jaws, and I laidmeatuntothem. He shall notreturnintothe landof Egypt, but the Assyrianshall be his king, becausethey refusedto return. And the swordshall abideon his cities, and shall consumehis branches, and devour them , because of their own counsels. And my peopleare bentto backslidingfrom me: though they calledthem tothe most High, none at allwould exalt him . Howshall I give thee up, Ephraim? how shall I deliverthee, Israel? howshall I makethee as Admah? how shall I setthee as Zeboim? mine heartis turnedwithinme, my repentingsare kindledtogether. I will notexecutethe fiercenessof mine anger, I will notreturnto destroyEphraim: forI am God, and notman; the Holy Onein the midstof thee: and I will notenterinto the city. They shall walkafterthe LORD: he shall roarlike a lion: whenheshall roar, then the childrenshall tremblefrom the west. They shall trembleas a birdout of Egypt, and as a doveout of the landof Assyria: and I will placethem intheir houses, saiththe LORD. Ephraimcompasseth me aboutwith lies, and the houseof Israelwith deceit: but JudahyetrulethwithGod, and is faithfulwiththe saints.
