The wordthatcametoJeremiahfromthe LORD, after thatNebuzaradanthe captainof the guardhad let him gofromRamah, when he had takenhim being boundin chainsamongallthat were carried away captiveof Jerusalemand Judah, which were carried away captiveunto Babylon. And the captainof the guardtookJeremiah, and saiduntohim, The LORDthy Godhath pronouncedthiseviluponthisplace. Now the LORDhath brought it , and doneaccording ashe hath said: becauseye have sinnedagainst the LORD, and have notobeyedhis voice, therefore thisthingis comeupon you. And now, behold, I loosethee this dayfromthe chainswhich were uponthine hand. Ifit seem good unto theeto comewithme into Babylon, come; and I will look welluntothee: but ifit seem ill unto theeto comewithme into Babylon, forbear: behold, allthe land is beforethee: whitherit seemethgoodand convenientfor thee to go, thithergo. Now while he was notyetgone back, he said , Go backalso toGedaliahthe sonof Ahikamthe sonof Shaphan, whomthe kingof Babylonhath made governorover the citiesof Judah, and dwellwithhim amongthe people: orgowheresoeverit seemethconvenientunto thee to go. So the captainof the guardgavehim victualsand a reward, and let him go. Then wentJeremiahuntoGedaliahthe sonof Ahikamto Mizpah; and dweltwithhim amongthe peoplethat were leftin the land. Now when allthe captainsof the forceswhich were in the fields, even theyand their men, heardthatthe kingof Babylonhad made Gedaliahthe sonof Ahikamgovernorin the land, andhad committeduntohim men, and women, and children, and of the poorof the land, of them thatwere notcarried away captiveto Babylon; Then they cametoGedaliahto Mizpah, even Ishmaelthe sonof Nethaniah, and Johananand Jonathanthe sonsof Kareah, and Seraiahthe sonof Tanhumeth, and the sonsof Ephaithe Netophathite, and Jezaniahthe sonof a Maachathite, theyand their men. And Gedaliahthe sonof Ahikamthe sonof Shaphansworeunto them and to their men, saying, Fearnotto servethe Chaldeans: dwellin the land, and servethe kingof Babylon, and it shall be wellwith you. As for me, behold, I will dwellat Mizpahto servethe Chaldeans, whichwill comeuntous: but ye, gatherye wine, and summer fruits, and oil, and put them in your vessels, and dwellin your citiesthatye have taken. Likewisewhen allthe Jewsthat were in Moab, and among the Ammonites, and in Edom, and that were in allthe countries, heardthatthe kingof Babylonhad lefta remnantof Judah, and thathe had setoverthem Gedaliahthe sonof Ahikamthe sonof Shaphan; Even allthe Jewsreturnedout of allplaceswhitherthey were driven, and cameto the landof Judah, toGedaliah, unto Mizpah, and gatheredwineand summer fruitsverymuch. Moreover Johananthe sonof Kareah, and allthe captainsof the forcesthat were in the fields, cametoGedaliahto Mizpah, And saiduntohim, Dost thou certainly knowthatBaalisthe kingof the Ammoniteshath sentIshmaelthe sonof Nethaniahto slaythee? But Gedaliahthe sonof Ahikambelievedthem not. Then Johananthe sonof KareahspoketoGedaliahin Mizpahsecretly, saying, Let me go, I pray thee, and I will slayIshmaelthe sonof Nethaniah, and nomanshall know it : whereforeshould he slaythee, that allthe Jewswhich are gathereduntothee should be scattered, and the remnantin Judahperish? But Gedaliahthe sonof AhikamsaiduntoJohananthe sonof Kareah, Thou shalt notdothisthing: forthouspeakestfalselyofIshmael.
