Ifthou wilt return, O Israel, saiththe LORD, returnuntome: and ifthou wilt put awaythine abominationsout of my sight, then shalt thou notremove. And thou shalt swear, The LORDliveth, in truth, in judgment, and in righteousness; and the nationsshall bless themselvesin him, and in him shall they glory. Forthussaiththe LORDto the menof Judahand Jerusalem, Break upyour fallow ground, and sownotamongthorns. Circumcise yourselvesto the LORD, and take awaythe foreskinsof your heart, ye menof Judahand inhabitantsof Jerusalem: lestmy furycome forthlike fire, and burnthat nonecan quench it , becauseof the evilof your doings. Declareye in Judah, and publishin Jerusalem; and say, Blowye the trumpetin the land: cry, gather together, and say, Assemble yourselves, and let us gointothe defensedcities. Set upthe standardtoward Zion: retire, staynot: forIwill bringevilfrom the north, and a greatdestruction. The lionis come upfrom his thicket, and the destroyerof the Gentilesis on his way; he is gone forthfrom his placeto makethy landdesolate; and thy citiesshall be laid waste, withoutan inhabitant. Forthisgirdyou with sackcloth, lamentand howl: forthe fierceangerof the LORDis notturned backfromus. And it shall come to passat thatday, saiththe LORD, that the heartof the kingshall perish, and the heartof the princes; and the priestsshall be astonished, and the prophetsshall wonder. Then saidI, Ah, LordGOD! surelythou hast greatly deceivedthispeopleand Jerusalem, saying, Ye shall havepeace; whereas the swordreachethuntothe soul. At thattimeshall it be saidto thispeopleand to Jerusalem, A drywindof the high placesin the wildernesstoward the daughterof my people, notto fan, norto cleanse, Even a fullwindfrom those places shall comeunto me: nowalsowill Igivesentenceagainst them. Behold, he shall come upas clouds, and his chariots shall be as a whirlwind: his horsesare swifterthan eagles. Woeunto us! forwe are spoiled. O Jerusalem, washthine heartfrom wickedness, thatthou mayest be saved. How longshall thy vainthoughtslodgewithinthee? Fora voicedeclarethfrom Dan, and publishethafflictionfrom mountEphraim. Make ye mentionto the nations; behold, publishagainstJerusalem, that watcherscomefrom a farcountry, and give outtheir voiceagainstthe citiesof Judah. As keepersof a field, arethey againsther round about; becauseshe hath been rebelliousagainst me, saiththe LORD. Thy wayand thy doingshave procuredthese things unto thee; this is thy wickedness, becauseit is bitter, becauseit reachethuntothine heart. My bowels, my bowels! I am painedat my veryheart; my heartmaketh a noisein me; I cannothold my peace, becausethou hast heard, O my soul, the soundof the trumpet, the alarmof war. Destructionupondestructionis cried; forthe wholelandis spoiled: suddenlyare my tentsspoiled, and my curtainsin a moment. How longshall I seethe standard, and hearthe soundof the trumpet? Formy people is foolish, they have notknownme; they are sottishchildren, and theyhave noneunderstanding: they are wiseto do evil, but to do goodthey have noknowledge. I beheldthe earth, and, lo, it was without form, and void; and the heavens, and they had nolight. I beheldthe mountains, and, lo, they trembled, and allthe hillsmoved lightly. I beheld, and, lo, there was noman, and allthe birdsof the heavenswere fled. I beheld, and, lo, the fruitful place was a wilderness, and allthe citiesthereof were broken downat the presenceof the LORD, and byhis fierceanger. Forthushath the LORDsaid, The wholelandshall bedesolate; yet will I notmakea full end. Forthisshall the earthmourn, and the heavensabovebe black: becauseI have spoken it , I have purposed it , and will notrepent, neitherwill I turn backfromit. The wholecityshall fleefor the noiseof the horsemenand bowmen; they shall gointo thickets, and climb upupon the rocks: everycity shall be forsaken, and nota mandwelltherein. And when thou art spoiled, whatwilt thou do? Thoughthou clothestthyself with crimson, thoughthou deckestthee with ornamentsof gold, thoughthou rentestthy facewith painting, in vainshalt thou make thyself fair; thy loverswill despisethee, they will seekthy life. ForI have hearda voiceas of a woman in travail, and the anguishas of her that bringeth forth her first child, the voiceof the daughterof Zion, that bewaileth herself, that spreadethher hands, saying , Woe is me now! formy soulis weariedbecause of murderers.
