The wordof the LORDthatcametoJeremiahconcerningthe dearth. Judahmourneth, and the gatesthereof languish; they are blackunto the ground; and the cryof Jerusalemis gone up. And their nobleshave senttheir little onesto the waters: they cametothe pits, and foundnowater; they returnedwith their vesselsempty; they were ashamedand confounded, and coveredtheir heads. Becausethe groundis chapped, forthere wasnorainin the earth, the plowmenwere ashamed, they coveredtheir heads. Yea, the hindalso calvedin the field, and forsook it , becausethere wasnograss. And the wild assesdid standinthe high places, they snuffed upthe windlike dragons; their eyesdid fail, because there was nograss. O LORD, thoughour iniquitiestestifyagainst us, dothou it for thy name's sake: forour backslidingsare many; we have sinnedagainst thee. O the hopeof Israel, the saviorthereof in timeof trouble, whyshouldest thou beas a strangerin the land, and as a wayfaring man that turneth asideto tarryfor a night? Whyshouldest thou beas a manastonished, as a mighty man that cannotsave? yet thou, O LORD, art in the midstof us, and we are calledby thy name; leaveus not. Thussaiththe LORDunto thispeople, Thushave they lovedto wander, they have notrefrainedtheir feet, therefore the LORDdoth notacceptthem; he will nowremembertheir iniquity, and visittheir sins. Then saidthe LORDuntome, Praynotforthispeoplefor their good. Whenthey fast, I will notheartheir cry; and whenthey offerburnt offeringand an oblation, I will notacceptthem: butIwill consumethem by the sword, and by the famine, and by the pestilence. Then saidI, Ah, LordGOD! behold, the prophetssayunto them, Ye shall notseethe sword, neithershall ye havefamine; butI will giveyou assuredpeacein thisplace. Then the LORDsaiduntome, The prophetsprophesyliesin my name: I sentthem not, neitherhave I commandedthem, neitherspokeuntothem: theyprophesyunto you a falsevisionand divination, and a thing of naught, and the deceitof their heart. Thereforethussaiththe LORDconcerningthe prophetsthat prophesyin my name, and Isentthem not, yet theysay, Swordand famineshall notbein thisland; By swordand famineshall thoseprophetsbe consumed. And the peopleto whomtheyprophesyshall becast outin the streetsof Jerusalembecauseof the famineand the sword; and they shall have noneto burythem, them, their wives, nor their sons, nor their daughters: for I will pourtheir wickednessuponthem. Therefore thou shalt saythisworduntothem; Let mine eyesrun downwith tearsnightand day, and let them notcease: forthe virgindaughterof my peopleis brokenwith a greatbreach, with a verygrievousblow. IfI go forthinto the field, then beholdthe slainwith the sword! and ifI enterinto the city, then beholdthem that are sickwith famine! yea, boththe prophetandthe priestgo aboutintoa landthat they knownot. Hast thou utterly rejectedJudah? hath thy soulloathedZion? whyhast thou smittenus, and there is nohealingfor us? we lookedfor peace, and there is nogood; and for the timeof healing, and beholdtrouble! We acknowledge, O LORD, our wickedness, and the iniquityof our fathers: forwe have sinnedagainst thee. Do notabhor us , for thy name's sake, do notdisgracethe throneof thy glory: remember, breaknotthy covenantwithus. Are there any among the vanitiesof the Gentilesthat can cause rain? orcan the heavensgiveshowers? art notthouhe, O LORDour God? therefore we will waitupon thee: forthouhast madeallthese things .
