Hearye the wordwhichthe LORDspeakethuntoyou, O houseof Israel: Thussaiththe LORD, Learnnotthe wayof the heathen, and be notdismayedat the signsof heaven; forthe heathenare dismayedat them. Forthe customsof the people are vain: for one cuttetha treeout of the forest, the workof the handsof the workman, with the axe. They deckit with silverand with gold; they fastenit with nailsand with hammers, that it movenot. They are uprightas the palm tree, but speaknot: they must needs be borne, becausethey cannotgo. Be notafraidofthem; forthey cannotdo evil, neitheralso is it inthem to do good. Forasmuch as there is nonelike unto thee, O LORD; thou art great, and thy name is greatin might. Whowould notfearthee, O Kingof nations? forto thee doth it appertain: forasmuchas among allthe wise men of the nations, and in alltheir kingdoms, there is nonelike unto thee. But they are altogetherbrutishand foolish: the stock is a doctrineof vanities. Silverspread into platesis broughtfrom Tarshish, and goldfrom Uphaz, the workof the workman, and of the handsof the founder: blueand purple is their clothing: they are allthe workof cunning men . But the LORD is the trueGod, he is the livingGod, and an everlastingking: at his wraththe earthshall tremble, and the nationsshall notbe able to abidehis indignation. Thusshall ye sayunto them, The godsthathave notmadethe heavensand the earth, even they shall perishfrom the earth, and fromundertheseheavens. He hath madethe earthby his power, he hath establishedthe worldby his wisdom, and hath stretched outthe heavensby his discretion. When he utterethhis voice, there is a multitudeof watersin the heavens, and he causeth the vaporsto ascendfrom the endsof the earth; he makethlightningswith rain, and bringeth forththe windout of his treasures. Everymanis brutishin his knowledge: everyfounderis confoundedby the graven image: forhis molten image is falsehood, and there is nobreathin them. They are vanity, and the workof errors: in the timeof their visitationthey shall perish. The portionof Jacob is notlike them: forhe is the formerof all things ; and Israel is the rodof his inheritance: The LORDof hosts is his name. Gather upthy waresout of the land, O inhabitantof the fortress. Forthussaiththe LORD, Behold, I will sling outthe inhabitantsof the landat thisonce, and will distressthem, thatthey may find it so . Woeis me formy hurt! my woundis grievous: but Isaid, Trulythis is a grief, and I must bearit. My tabernacleis spoiled, and allmy cordsare broken: my childrenare gone forthof me, and they are not: there is noneto stretch forthmy tentany more, and to set upmy curtains. Forthe pastorsare become brutish, and have notsoughtthe LORD: thereforethey shall notprosper, and alltheir flocksshall be scattered. Behold, the noiseof the bruitis come, and a greatcommotionout of the north country, to makethe citiesof Judahdesolate, and a denof dragons. O LORD, I knowthatthe wayof man is notin himself: it is notin manthat walkethto directhis steps. O LORD, correctme, but withjudgment; notin thine anger, lestthou bring me to nothing. Pour outthy furyuponthe heathenthatknowthee not, and uponthe familiesthatcallnoton thy name: forthey have eaten upJacob, and devouredhim, and consumedhim, and have made his habitationdesolate.
