Isaidin mine heart, Go tonow, I will provethee with mirth, therefore enjoypleasure: and, behold, thisalso is vanity. I saidof laughter, It is mad: and of mirth, Whatdoethit? I soughtin mine heartto givemyselfunto wine, yet acquaintingmine heartwith wisdom; and to lay holdon folly, tillI might seewhat was thatgoodfor the sonsof men, whichthey should dounderthe heavenallthe daysof their life. I made me greatworks; I builtme houses; I plantedme vineyards: I mademe gardensand orchards, and I plantedtreesin them of all kind of fruits: I mademe poolsof water, to watertherewiththe woodthat bringeth forthtrees: I got me servantsand maidens, and hadservants bornin my house; alsoI hadgreatpossessionsof greatand small cattleabove allthat werein Jerusalembeforeme: I gatheredme alsosilverand gold, and the peculiar treasureof kingsand of the provinces: I gotme men singersand women singers, and the delightsof the sonsof men, as musical instruments, and that of all sorts. So I was great, and increased morethan allthat werebeforeme in Jerusalem: alsomy wisdomremainedwith me. And whatsoevermine eyesdesiredI keptnotfromthem, I withheldnotmy heartfrom anyjoy; formy heartrejoicedin allmy labor: and thiswasmy portionof allmy labor. Then Ilookedon allthe worksthat my hands had wrought, and on the laborthat I had laboredto do: and, behold, all was vanityand vexationof spirit, and there was noprofitunderthe sun. And Iturnedmyself to beholdwisdom, and madness, and folly: forwhat can the man do that comethafterthe king? even that whichhath been alreadydone. Then Isawthatwisdomexcellethfolly, as far as lightexcellethdarkness. The wise man's eyes are in his head; but the foolwalkethin darkness: and I myselfperceivedalsothat one eventhappenethtothem all. Then saidIin my heart, As it happenethto the fool, so it happenethevento me; and whywas Ithenmorewise? Then I saidin my heart, that thisalso is vanity. For there is noremembranceof the wisemore thanof the foolforever; seeing that which now is in the daysto comeshall allbe forgotten. And howdieththe wise man ? asthe fool. Therefore I hatedlife; becausethe workthat is wroughtunderthe sun is grievousuntome: forall is vanityand vexationof spirit. Yea, Ihatedallmy laborwhich Ihad takenunderthe sun: because I should leaveit unto the manthat shall beafterme. And whoknowethwhether he shall bea wise man ora fool? yet shall he have ruleover allmy laborwherein I have labored, and wherein I have showed myself wiseunderthe sun. This is alsovanity. Therefore Iwent aboutto cause my heartto despairofallthe laborwhich I tookunderthe sun. Forthere isa manwhose labor is in wisdom, and in knowledge, and in equity; yet to a manthat hath notlaboredtherein shall he leaveit for his portion. Thisalso is vanityand a greatevil. Forwhathathmanof allhis labor, and of the vexationof his heart, wherein hehath laboredunderthe sun? Forallhis days are sorrows, and his travailgrief; yea, his hearttaketh notrestin the night. Thisis alsovanity. There is nothingbetterfor a man, than that he should eatand drink, and that he should make his soulgoodin his labor. ThisalsoIsaw, thatit was from the handof God. Forwhocan eat, or whoelse can hasten hereunto , morethanI? For God givethto a manthat is goodin his sightwisdom, and knowledge, and joy: but to the sinnerhe givethtravail, to gatherand to heap up, that he may giveto him that is goodbeforeGod. Thisalso is vanityand vexationof spirit.
