The wordsof the Preacher, the sonof David, kingin Jerusalem. Vanityof vanities, saiththe Preacher, vanityof vanities; all is vanity. Whatprofithath a manof allhis laborwhich he takethunderthe sun? One generationpasseth away, and another generationcometh: but the earthabidethforever. The sunalso ariseth, and the sungoeth down, and hastethtohis placewherehearose. The windgoethtowardthe south, and turneth aboutuntothe north; it whirleth aboutcontinually, and the windreturneth againaccordingto his circuits. Allthe riversrunintothe sea; yet the sea is notfull; untothe placefrom whence the riverscome, thithertheyreturnagain. Allthings are full of labor; mancannotutter it : the eyeis notsatisfiedwith seeing, northe earfilledwith hearing. The thingthat hath been, it is that which shall be; and thatwhich is done is thatwhich shall be done: and there is nonew thing underthe sun. Is there any thingwhereof it may be said, See, this is new? ithath beenalreadyof old time, whichwasbeforeus. There is noremembranceof former things ; neithershall there be any remembranceof things that are to comewith those that shall comeafter. Ithe PreacherwaskingoverIsraelin Jerusalem. And I gavemy heartto seekand search outby wisdomconcerningall things thatare doneunderheaven: thissoretravailhath Godgivento the sonsof manto be exercisedtherewith. I have seenallthe worksthat are doneunderthe sun; and, behold, all is vanityand vexationof spirit. That which is crookedcannotbe made straight: and that which is wantingcannotbe numbered. Icommunedwithmine own heart, saying, Lo, Iam come to great estate, and have gotten morewisdomthanall they thathave beenbeforeme inJerusalem: yea, my hearthad greatexperienceof wisdomand knowledge. And I gavemy heartto knowwisdom, and to knowmadnessand folly: I perceivedthat thisalso is vexationof spirit. Forin muchwisdom is muchgrief: and he that increasethknowledgeincreasethsorrow.
