When Jethro, the priestof Midian, Moses' father-in-law, heardof allthatGodhad donefor Moses, and for Israelhis people, and thatthe LORDhad brought Israel outof Egypt; Then Jethro, Moses' father-in-law, tookZipporah, Moses' wife, afterhe had sent her back, And her twosons; of whichthe nameof the one was Gershom; forhe said, I have beenan alienin a strangeland: And the nameof the other was Eliezer; forthe Godof my father, said he, was mine help, and deliveredme from the swordof Pharaoh: And Jethro, Moses' father-in-law, camewith his sonsand his wifeuntoMosesintothe wilderness, whereheencampedat the mountof God: And he saiduntoMoses, Ithy father-in-law Jethroam comeuntothee, and thy wife, and her twosonswithher. And Moseswent outto meethis father-in-law, and did obeisance, and kissedhim; and they askedeachotherof their welfare; and they cameinto the tent. And Mosestoldhis father-in-law allthatthe LORDhad doneunto Pharaohand to the EgyptiansforIsrael's sake, and allthe travailthathad come uponthem by the way, and how the LORDdeliveredthem. And Jethrorejoicedforallthe goodnesswhichthe LORDhad doneto Israel, whomhe had deliveredout of the handof the Egyptians. And Jethrosaid, Blessed be the LORD, whohath deliveredyou out of the handof the Egyptians, and out of the handof Pharaoh, whohath deliveredthe peoplefrom underthe handof the Egyptians. NowI knowthatthe LORD is greaterthan allgods: forin the thingwhereinthey dealt proudly he was abovethem. And Jethro, Moses' father-in-law, tooka burnt offeringand sacrificesfor God: and Aaroncame, and allthe eldersof Israel, to eatbreadwithMoses' father-in-law beforeGod. And it came to passon the morrow, that Mosessatto judgethe people: and the peoplestoodbyMosesfromthe morninguntothe evening. And when Moses' father-in-law sawallthathedidto the people, he said, What is thisthingthatthoudoestto the people? whysittestthouthyself alone, and allthe peoplestandbythee frommorninguntoeven? And Mosessaidunto his father-in-law, Becausethe peoplecomeuntome to inquireof God: Whenthey havea matter, they comeuntome; and I judgebetweenoneand another, and I do make them knownthe statutesof God, and his laws. And Moses' father-in-law saiduntohim, The thingthatthoudoest is notgood. Thou wilt surely wear away, boththou, andthispeoplethat is withthee: forthis thing is too heavyforthee; thou art notableto performit thyself alone. Hearkennowunto my voice, I will give thee counsel, and Godshall bewiththee: Bethoufor the peopleto Godward, that thoumayest bringthe causesuntoGod: And thou shalt teachthem ordinancesand laws, and shalt showthem the waywherein they must walk, and the workthatthey must do. Moreover thoushalt provideout of allthe peopleablemen, such as fearGod, menof truth, hatingcovetousness; and place such overthem, to be rulersof thousands, and rulersof hundreds, rulersof fifties, and rulersof tens: And let them judgethe peopleat allseasons: and it shall be, that everygreatmatterthey shall bringuntothee, but everysmallmattertheyshall judge: so shall it be easierforthyself, and they shall bear the burden withthee. Ifthou shalt dothisthing, and Godcommandthee so , then thou shalt be ableto endure, and allthispeopleshall alsogototheir placein peace. So Moseshearkenedto the voiceof his father-in-law, and didallthathe had said. And Moseschoseablemenout of allIsrael, and madethem headsoverthe people, rulersof thousands, rulersof hundreds, rulersof fifties, and rulersof tens. And they judgedthe peopleat allseasons: the hardcausesthey broughtuntoMoses, but everysmallmatterthey judgedthemselves. And Moseslet his father-in-law depart; and he went his wayintohis own land.
