But it came to pass, that whenSanballatheardthatwebuiltthe wall, he was wroth, and took great indignation, and mockedthe Jews. And he spokebeforehis brethrenand the armyof Samaria, and said, Whatdothese feebleJews? will they fortifythemselves? will they sacrifice? will they make an endin a day? will they revivethe stonesout of the heapsof the rubbishwhichare burned? Now Tobiahthe Ammonite was byhim, and he said, Eventhat whichtheybuild, ifa foxgo up, he shall even break downtheir stonewall. Hear, O our God; forwe aredespised: and turntheir reproachupontheir own head, and givethem for a preyin the landof captivity: And covernottheir iniquity, and let nottheir sinbe blotted outfrom beforethee: forthey have provoked thee to angerbeforethe builders. So builtwe the wall; and allthe wallwas joined togetheruntothe halfthereof: for the peoplehada mindto work. But it came to pass, that whenSanballat, and Tobiah, and the Arabians, and the Ammonites, and the Ashdodites, heardthatthe wallsof Jerusalemwere made up, and thatthe breachesbeganto be stopped, then they were verywroth, And conspiredallof them togetherto come and to fightagainst Jerusalem, and to hinderit. Nevertheless we made our prayeruntoour God, and seta watchagainstthem dayand night, because ofthem. And Judahsaid, The strengthof the bearers of burdensis decayed, and there is muchrubbish; so that weare notableto buildthe wall. And our adversariessaid, They shall notknow, neithersee, tillwe comeinthe midst amongthem, and slaythem, and cause the workto cease. And it came to pass, that whenthe Jewswhich dweltbythem came, they saidunto us tentimes, From allplaceswhenceye shall returnuntous they will be upon you . Therefore setI in the lowerplacesbehindthe wall, and on the higher places, I even setthe peopleafter their familieswiththeir swords, their spears, and their bows. And I looked, and rose up, and saiduntothe nobles, and tothe rulers, and tothe restof the people, Be notye afraidofthem: rememberthe Lord, which is greatand terrible, and fightforyour brethren, your sons, and your daughters, your wives, and your houses. And it came to pass, whenour enemiesheardthatit was knownunto us, and Godhad brought their counsel to naught, that we returnedallof us tothe wall, every oneuntohis work. And it came to passfromthattimeforth, that the halfof my servantswroughtin the work, and the other halfof them heldboth the spears, the shields, and the bows, and the habergeons; and the rulers were behindallthe houseof Judah. They which builton the wall, and they that boreburdens, with those that laded, every one with oneof his handswroughtin the work, and with the other hand helda weapon. For the builders, every onehad his swordgirdedbyhis side, and so built. And he that soundedthe trumpet was byme. And I saiduntothe nobles, and tothe rulers, and tothe restof the people, The work is greatand large, and weare separateduponthe wall, onefarfrom another. In whatplace therefore ye hearthe soundof the trumpet, resortye thitheruntous: our Godshall fightfor us. So welaboredin the work: and halfof them heldthe spearsfrom the risingof the morningtillthe starsappeared. Likewiseat the sametimesaidI unto the people, Let every onewith his servantlodgewithinJerusalem, that in the nightthey may bea guardto us, and laboron the day. So neitherI, nor my brethren, nor my servants, nor the menof the guardwhichfollowedme, noneof usput offour clothes, saving that every oneput them offfor washing.
