So when Davidwas oldand fullof days, he madeSolomonhis sonking overIsrael. And he gathered togetherallthe princesof Israel, with the priestsand the Levites. Now the Leviteswere numberedfrom the ageof thirtyyearsand upward: and their numberby their polls, man by man, wasthirtyand eightthousand. Of which, twentyand fourthousand were to set forwardthe workof the houseof the LORD; and sixthousand were officersand judges: Moreover fourthousand were porters; and fourthousandpraisedthe LORDwith the instrumentswhichI made, said David , to praise therewith . And Daviddividedthem into coursesamong the sonsof Levi, namely , Gershon, Kohath, and Merari. Of the Gershonites were , Laadan, and Shimei. The sonsof Laadan; the chief was Jehiel, and Zetham, and Joel, three. The sonsof Shimei; Shelomith, and Haziel, and Haran, three. These were the chiefof the fathersof Laadan. And the sonsof Shimei were , Jahath, Zina, and Jeush, and Beriah. Thesefour were the sonsof Shimei. And Jahathwasthe chief, and Zizahthe second: but Jeushand Beriahhad not manysons; therefore they werein onereckoning, according to their father's house. The sonsof Kohath; Amram, Izhar, Hebron, and Uzziel, four. The sonsof Amram; Aaronand Moses: and Aaronwas separated, that he should sanctifythe most holy things, heand his sonsforever, to burn incensebeforethe LORD, to ministerunto him, and to blessin his nameforever. Now concerning Mosesthe manof God, his sonswere namedofthe tribeof Levi. The sonsof Moses were , Gershom, and Eliezer. Of the sonsof Gershom, Shebuel was the chief. And the sonsof Eliezer were , Rehabiahthe chief. And Eliezerhadnoneothersons; but the sonsof Rehabiahwere very many. Of the sonsof Izhar; Shelomiththe chief. Of the sonsof Hebron; Jeriahthe first, Amariahthe second, Jahazielthe third, and Jekameamthe fourth. Of the sonsof Uzziel; Michahthe first, and Jesiahthe second. The sonsof Merari; Mahli, and Mushi. The sonsof Mahli; Eleazar, and Kish. And Eleazardied, and hadnosons, butdaughters: and their brethrenthe sonsof Kishtookthem. The sonsof Mushi; Mahli, and Eder, and Jeremoth, three. These were the sonsof Leviafter the houseof their fathers; even the chiefof the fathers, as they were countedby numberof namesby their polls, that didthe workfor the serviceof the houseof the LORD, from the ageof twentyyearsand upward. ForDavidsaid, The LORDGodof Israelhath given restunto his people, that they may dwellin Jerusalemforever: And alsounto the Levites; they shall no more carrythe tabernacle, nor anyvesselsof it for the servicethereof. Forby the lastwordsof Davidthe Levites were numberedfrom twenty years oldand above: Becausetheir office was to wait onthe sonsof Aaronfor the serviceof the houseof the LORD, inthe courts, and inthe chambers, and inthe purifyingof allholy things, and the workof the serviceof the houseof God; Both for the shewbread, and for the fine flourfor meat offering, and for the unleavenedcakes, and for that which is baked in the pan, and for that which is fried, and for all mannerof measureand size; And to standevery morningto thankand praisethe LORD, and likewiseat even; And to offerallburnt sacrificesunto the LORDin the sabbaths, in the new moons, and on the set feasts, by number, according to the ordercommanded untothem, continuallybeforethe LORD: And that they should keepthe chargeof the tabernacleof the congregation, and the chargeof the holy place , and the chargeof the sonsof Aarontheir brethren, in the serviceof the houseof the LORD.
