Now it came to passafterthis, that Nahashthe kingof the childrenof Ammondied, and his sonreignedin his stead. And Davidsaid, I will showkindnessuntoHanunthe sonof Nahash, becausehis fathershowedkindnesstome. And Davidsentmessengersto comforthim concerninghis father. So the servantsof Davidcameintothe landof the childrenof AmmontoHanun, to comforthim. But the princesof the childrenof Ammonsaidto Hanun, Thinkestthou that Daviddoth honorthy father, thathe hath sentcomfortersunto thee? are nothis servantscomeuntothee forto search, and to overthrow, and to spy outthe land? Wherefore HanuntookDavid's servants, and shavedthem, and cut offtheir garmentsin the midsthard bytheir buttocks, and sent them away. Then there went certain , and toldDavidhowthe menwere served. And he sentto meetthem: forthe menweregreatlyashamed. And the kingsaid, Tarryat Jerichountilyour beardsbe grown, and then return. And when the childrenof Ammonsawthatthey had made themselves odioustoDavid, Hanunand the childrenof Ammonsenta thousandtalentsof silverto hirethem chariotsand horsemenout ofMesopotamia, and out ofSyria-maachah, and out of Zobah. So they hiredthirtyand twothousandchariots, and the kingof Maachahand his people; who cameand pitchedbeforeMedeba. And the childrenof Ammongathered themselves togetherfrom their cities, and cameto battle. And when Davidheard of it , he sentJoab, and allthe hostof the mighty men. And the childrenof Ammoncame out, and put the battle in arraybefore the gateof the city: and the kingsthatwere come were by themselvesin the field. Now when Joabsawthatthe battlewas setagainsthim beforeand behind, he choseout of allthe choiceof Israel, and put them in arrayagainstthe Syrians. And the restof the peoplehe deliveredunto the handof Abishaihis brother, and they set themselves in arrayagainstthe childrenof Ammon. And he said, Ifthe Syriansbe too strongforme, then thou shalt helpme: but ifthe childrenof Ammonbe too strongforthee, then I will helpthee. Be of good courage, and let us behave ourselves valiantlyforour people, and forthe citiesof our God: and let the LORDdo that which is goodin his sight. So Joaband the peoplethat were withhim drew nighbeforethe Syriansunto the battle; and they fledbeforehim. And when the childrenof Ammonsawthatthe Syrianswere fled, theylikewisefledbeforeAbishaihis brother, and enteredinto the city. Then Joabcameto Jerusalem. And when the Syrianssawthatthey were put to the worsebeforeIsrael, they sentmessengers, and drew forththe Syriansthat were beyondthe river: and Shophachthe captainof the hostof Hadarezer went beforethem. And it was toldDavid; and he gatheredallIsrael, and passed overJordan, and cameuponthem, and set the battle in arrayagainstthem. So when Davidhad put the battle in arrayagainstthe Syrians, they foughtwithhim.
