And it came to pass, when kingHezekiahheard it , that he renthis clothes, and covered himselfwith sackcloth, and wentinto the houseof the LORD. And he sentEliakim, which was overthe household, and Shebnathe scribe, and the eldersof the priests, coveredwith sackcloth, toIsaiahthe prophetthe sonof Amoz. And they saiduntohim, ThussaithHezekiah, Thisday is a dayof trouble, and of rebuke, and blasphemy: forthe childrenare cometothe birth, and there is notstrengthto bring forth. It may bethe LORDthy Godwill hearallthe wordsof Rab-shakeh, whomthe kingof Assyriahis masterhath sentto reproachthe livingGod; and will reprovethe wordswhichthe LORDthy Godhath heard: wherefore lift up thy prayerforthe remnantthat are left. So the servantsof kingHezekiahcametoIsaiah. And Isaiahsaidunto them, Thusshall ye saytoyour master, Thussaiththe LORD, Be not afraidofthe wordswhichthou hast heard, with whichthe servantsof the kingof Assyriahave blasphemedme. Behold, I will senda blastupon him, and he shall heara rumor, and shall returnto his own land; and I will cause him to fallby the swordin his own land. So Rab-shakeh returned, and foundthe kingof AssyriawarringagainstLibnah: forhe had heardthathe was departedfrom Lachish. And when he heardsayofTirhakahkingof Ethiopia, Behold, he is come outto fightagainstthee: he sentmessengersagainuntoHezekiah, saying, Thusshall ye speaktoHezekiahkingof Judah, saying, Let notthy Godin whomthoutrustestdeceivethee, saying, Jerusalemshall notbe deliveredinto the handof the kingof Assyria. Behold, thouhast heardwhatthe kingsof Assyriahave doneto alllands, by destroying them utterly: and shalt thoube delivered? Have the godsof the nationsdeliveredthem whichmy fathershave destroyed; as Gozan, and Haran, and Rezeph, and the childrenof Edenwhich were in Thelasar? Where is the kingof Hamath, and the kingof Arpad, and the kingof the cityof Sepharvaim, of Hena, and Ivah? And Hezekiahreceivedthe letterof the handof the messengers, and readit: and Hezekiahwent upinto the houseof the LORD, and spreadit beforethe LORD. And Hezekiahprayedbeforethe LORD, and said, O LORDGodof Israel, which dwellest between the cherubims, thouart the God, even thou alone, of allthe kingdomsof the earth; thouhast madeheavenand earth. LORD, bow downthine ear, and hear: open, LORD, thine eyes, and see: and hearthe wordsof Sennacherib, whichhath senthim to reproachthe livingGod. Of a truth, LORD, the kingsof Assyriahave destroyedthe nationsand their lands, And have casttheir godsinto the fire: forthey were nogods, butthe workof men's hands, woodand stone: therefore they have destroyedthem. Nowtherefore, O LORDour God, I beseech thee, savethou us out of his hand, that allthe kingdomsof the earthmay knowthatthou art the LORDGod, even thou only. Then Isaiahthe sonof AmozsenttoHezekiah, saying, Thussaiththe LORDGodof Israel, That whichthou hast prayedtome againstSennacheribkingof AssyriaI have heard. This is the wordthatthe LORDhath spokenconcerninghim; The virginthe daughterof Zionhath despisedthee, and laughed thee to scorn; the daughterof Jerusalemhath shakenher headatthee. Whomhast thou reproachedand blasphemed? and againstwhomhast thou exalted thy voice, and lifted upthine eyeson high? even againstthe Holy One of Israel. Bythy messengersthou hast reproachedthe Lord, and hast said, With the multitudeof my chariotsIam come upto the heightof the mountains, to the sidesof Lebanon, and will cut downthe tallcedar treesthereof, and the choicefir treesthereof: and I will enterinto the lodgingsof his borders, and into the forestof his Carmel. Ihave diggedand drunkstrangewaters, and with the soleof my feethave I dried upallthe riversof besieged places. Hast thou notheardlong ago how I have doneit, and of ancient timesthat I have formedit? nowhave I brought it to pass, that thou shouldest beto lay wastefencedcities into ruinousheaps. Therefore their inhabitantswere of smallpower, they were dismayedand confounded; they were as the grassof the field, and as the greenherb, as the grasson the housetops, and as corn blastedbeforeit be grown up. But I knowthy abode, and thy going out, and thy coming in, and thy rageagainstme. Becausethy rageagainstme and thy tumultis come upinto mine ears, therefore I will putmy hookin thy nose, and my bridlein thy lips, and I will turn thee backby the wayby whichthou camest. And this shall be a signunto thee, Ye shall eatthis yearsuch things as grow of themselves, and in the secondyearthat which springeth of the same; and in the thirdyearsowye, and reap, and plantvineyards, and eatthe fruitsthereof. And the remnantthat is escapedof the houseof Judahshall yet againtake rootdownward, and bearfruitupward. Forout of Jerusalemshall go fortha remnant, and they that escapeout of mountZion: the zealof the LORD of hosts shall dothis. Thereforethussaiththe LORDconcerningthe kingof Assyria, He shall notcomeintothiscity, norshootan arrowthere, norcome beforeit with shield, norcasta bankagainstit. By the waythathe came, by the same shall he return, and shall notcomeintothiscity, saiththe LORD. For I will defendthiscity, to saveit, for mine own sake, and for my servantDavid's sake. And it came to passthatnight, that the angelof the LORDwent out, and smotein the campof the Assyriansa hundredfourscoreand fivethousand: and when they arose earlyin the morning, behold, they were alldeadcorpses. So Sennacheribkingof Assyriadeparted, and wentand returned, and dweltat Nineveh. And it came to pass, as hewas worshipingin the houseof Nisrochhis god, that Adrammelechand Sharezerhis sonssmotehim with the sword: and theyescapedinto the landof Armenia. And Esarhaddonhis sonreignedin his stead.
