Onlythe peoplesacrificedin high places, becausethere was nohousebuiltunto the nameof the LORD, untilthosedays. And Solomonlovedthe LORD, walkingin the statutesof Davidhis father: onlyhesacrificedand burnt incensein high places. And the kingwentto Gibeonto sacrificethere; forthat was the greathigh place: a thousandburnt offeringsdid Solomonofferuponthataltar. In Gibeonthe LORDappearedtoSolomonin a dreamby night: and Godsaid, AskwhatI shall givethee. And Solomonsaid, Thouhast showeduntothy servantDavidmy fathergreatmercy, according ashe walkedbeforethee in truth, and in righteousness, and in uprightnessof heartwiththee; and thou hast keptfor him thisgreatkindness, that thou hast givenhim a sonto sitonhis throne, as it is thisday. And now, O LORDmy God, thouhast made thy servantkinginsteadof Davidmy father: and I am but a littlechild: I knownot how to go outor come in. And thy servant is in the midstof thy peoplewhichthou hast chosen, a greatpeople, thatcannotbe numberednorcountedfor multitude. Givetherefore thy servantan understandingheartto judgethy people, that I may discernbetweengoodand bad: forwhois ableto judgethisthy so greata people? And the speechpleasedthe Lord, thatSolomonhad askedthisthing. And Godsaiduntohim, Becausethou hast askedthisthing, and hast notaskedfor thyself longlife; neitherhast askedrichesfor thyself, norhast askedthe lifeof thine enemies; but hast askedfor thyself understandingto discernjudgment; Behold, I have doneaccording to thy words: lo, I have giventhee a wiseand an understandingheart; so thatthere wasnonelike theebeforethee, neitherafterthee shall any ariselike unto thee. And I have alsogiventhee that whichthou hast notasked, bothriches, andhonor: so thatthere shall notbeanyamong the kingslike unto theeallthy days. And ifthou wilt walkin my ways, to keepmy statutesand my commandments, asthy fatherDaviddid walk, then I will lengthenthy days. And Solomonawoke; and, behold, it was a dream. And he cameto Jerusalem, and stoodbeforethe arkof the covenantof the LORD, and offered upburnt offerings, and offeredpeace offerings, and madea feastto allhis servants. Thencamethere twowomen, that were harlots, untothe king, and stoodbeforehim. And the onewomansaid, Omy lord, Iand thiswomandwellin onehouse; and I was delivered of a childwithher in the house. And it came to passthe thirddayafter that I was delivered, that thiswomanwas deliveredalso: and we were together; there was nostrangerwithus in the house, savewetwoin the house. And thiswoman's childdiedin the night; becauseshe overlaidit. And she aroseat midnight, and tookmy sonfrom besideme, while thine handmaidslept, and laidit in her bosom, and laidher deadchildin my bosom. And when I rosein the morningto give my child suck, behold, it was dead: but when I had consideredit in the morning, behold, it wasnotmy son, whichI did bear. And the otherwomansaid, Nay; butthe living is my son, and the dead is thy son. And thissaid, No; butthe dead is thy son, and the living is my son. Thus they spokebeforethe king. Then saidthe king, The onesaith, This is my sonthat liveth, and thy son is the dead: and the othersaith, Nay; butthy son is the dead, and my son is the living. And the kingsaid, Bringme a sword. And they broughta swordbeforethe king. And the kingsaid, Dividethe livingchildin two, and givehalfto the one, and halfto the other. Then spokethe womanwhosethe livingchild was untothe king, forher bowelsyearneduponher son, and she said, Omy lord, giveher the livingchild, and in nowise slayit. But the othersaid, Let it beneithermine northine, but divide it . Then the kingansweredand said, Giveher the livingchild, and in nowise slayit: she is the motherthereof. And allIsraelheardof the judgmentwhichthe kinghad judged; and they fearedthe king: forthey sawthatthe wisdomof God was in him, to dojudgment.
