And it came to pass after manydays, that the wordof the LORDcametoElijahin the thirdyear, saying, Go, show thyselfuntoAhab; and I will sendrainuponthe earth. And Elijahwentto show himselfuntoAhab. And there was a sorefaminein Samaria. And AhabcalledObadiah, which was the governorof his house. (Now Obadiahfearedthe LORDgreatly: For it was so , when Jezebelcut offthe prophetsof the LORD, that Obadiahtooka hundredprophets, and hidthem by fiftyin a cave, and fedthem with breadand water.) And AhabsaiduntoObadiah, Gointo the land, untoallfountainsof water, and untoallbrooks: peradventurewe may findgrassto save the horses and mules alive, that we losenotall the beasts. So they dividedthe landbetween them to passthroughout it: Ahabwentonewayby himself, and Obadiahwentanotherwayby himself. And as Obadiahwasin the way, behold, Elijahmethim: and he knewhim, and fellonhis face, and said, Art thouthatmy lordElijah? And he answeredhim, I am : go, tellthy lord, Behold, Elijah is here . And he said, Whathave I sinned, thatthouwouldest deliverthy servantinto the handof Ahab, to slayme? As the LORDthy Godliveth, there isnonationor kingdom, whithermy lordhath notsentto seekthee: and when they said, He is not there ; he took an oathof the kingdomand nation, thatthey foundthee not. And nowthousayest, Go, tellthy lord, Behold, Elijah is here . And it shall come to pass, as soon as Iam gonefromthee, that the Spiritof the LORDshall carrythee whitherI knownot; and so when I comeand tellAhab, and he cannotfindthee, he shall slayme: but I thy servantfearthe LORDfrom my youth. Was it nottoldmy lordwhatI didwhen Jezebelslewthe prophetsof the LORD, how I hida hundredmenof the LORD's prophetsby fiftyin a cave, and fedthem with breadand water? And nowthousayest, Go, tellthy lord, Behold, Elijah is here : and he shall slayme. And Elijahsaid, As the LORDof hostsliveth, beforewhomI stand, I will surelyshow myselfuntohim today. So Obadiahwentto meetAhab, and toldhim: and Ahabwentto meetElijah. And it came to pass, when AhabsawElijah, that Ahabsaiduntohim, Art thouhe thattroublethIsrael? And he answered, I have nottroubledIsrael; butthou, and thy father's house, in that ye have forsakenthe commandmentsof the LORD, and thou hast followedBaalim. Nowtherefore send, and gathertome allIsraeluntomountCarmel, and the prophetsof Baalfourhundredand fifty, and the prophetsof the grovesfourhundred, which eatat Jezebel's table. So Ahabsentunto allthe childrenof Israel, and gathered the prophets togetheruntomountCarmel. And Elijahcameuntoallthe people, and said, How longhaltyebetweentwoopinions? ifthe LORD be God, followhim: but ifBaal, then followhim. And the peopleansweredhim nota word. Then saidElijahuntothe people, I, even I only, remaina prophetof the LORD; but Baal's prophets are fourhundredand fiftymen. Let them therefore giveus twobullocks; and let them chooseonebullockfor themselves, and cut it in pieces, and lay it onwood, and putnofire under : and Iwill dressthe otherbullock, and lay it onwood, and putnofire under : And callye on the nameof your gods, and Iwill callon the nameof the LORD: and the Godthatanswerethby fire, let himbeGod. And allthe peopleansweredand said, It is wellspoken. And Elijahsaidunto the prophetsof Baal, Chooseyou onebullockfor yourselves, and dress it first; forye are many; and callon the nameof your gods, but putnofire under . And they tookthe bullockwhichwas giventhem, and they dressed it , and calledon the nameof Baalfrom morningeven untilnoon, saying, O Baal, hearus. But there was novoice, norany that answered. And they leapeduponthe altarwhichwas made. And it came to passat noon, that Elijahmockedthem, and said, Cryaloud: forhe is a god; eitherhe is talking, orhe is pursuing, orhe is in a journey, or peradventurehesleepeth, and must be awaked. And they criedaloud, and cut themselvesafter their mannerwith knivesand lancets, tillthe bloodgushed outuponthem. And it came to pass, when middaywas past, and they prophesieduntilthe time of the offeringof the evening sacrifice, that there was neithervoice, norany to answer, norany that regarded. And Elijahsaidunto allthe people, Come nearuntome. And allthe peoplecame nearuntohim. And he repairedthe altarof the LORD that was broken down. And Elijahtooktwelvestones, according to the numberof the tribesof the sonsof Jacob, untowhomthe wordof the LORDcame, saying, Israelshall bethy name: And withthe stoneshe builtan altarin the nameof the LORD: and he madea trenchaboutthe altar, as great as would containtwo measuresof seed. And he putthe woodin order, and cutthe bullockin pieces, and laid him onthe wood, and said, Fillfourbarrelswith water, and pour it onthe burnt sacrifice, and onthe wood. And he said, Do it the second time. And they did it the second time. And he said, Do it the third time. And they did it the third time. And the waterranround aboutthe altar; and he filledthe trenchalsowith water. And it came to passat the time of the offeringof the evening sacrifice, that Elijahthe prophetcame near, and said, LORDGodof Abraham, Isaac, and of Israel, let it be knownthis daythatthou art Godin Israel, and that I am thy servant, and that I have doneallthesethingsat thy word. Hearme, O LORD, hearme, that thispeoplemay knowthatthou art the LORDGod, and that thouhast turnedtheir heartback again. Then the fireof the LORDfell, and consumedthe burnt sacrifice, and the wood, and the stones, and the dust, and licked upthe waterthat was in the trench. And when allthe peoplesaw it , they fellontheir faces: and they said, The LORD, he is the God; the LORD, he is the God. And Elijahsaidunto them, Takethe prophetsof Baal; let notoneof themescape. And they tookthem: and Elijahbrought them downtothe brookKishon, and slewthem there. And Elijahsaidunto Ahab, Get thee up, eatand drink; for there is a soundof abundanceof rain. So Ahabwent upto eatand to drink. And Elijahwent uptothe topof Carmel; and he cast himself downupon the earth, and puthis facebetweenhis knees, And saidtohis servant, Go upnow, looktowardthe sea. And he went up, and looked, and said, There is nothing. And he said, Go againseventimes. And it came to passat the seventh time, that he said, Behold, there arisetha littlecloudout of the sea, like a man's hand. And he said, Go up, sayuntoAhab, Prepare thy chariot , and get thee down, that the rainstopthee not. And it came to passin the meanwhile, that the heavenwas blackwith cloudsand wind, and there wasa greatrain. And Ahabrode, and wentto Jezreel.
