And againthe angerof the LORDwas kindledagainst Israel, and he movedDavidagainst them to say, Go, numberIsraeland Judah. For the kingsaidtoJoabthe captainof the host, which was withhim, Gonowthrough allthe tribesof Israel, from Daneven toBeer-sheba, and numberye the people, that I may knowthe numberof the people. And Joabsaiduntothe king, Now the LORDthy Godadduntothe people, how many soever they bea hundredfold, and that the eyesof my lordthe kingmay see it : but whydoth my lordthe kingdelightin thisthing? Notwithstanding the king's wordprevailedagainstJoab, and againstthe captainsof the host. And Joaband the captainsof the hostwent outfrom the presenceof the king, to numberthe peopleof Israel. And they passed overJordan, and pitchedin Aroer, on the right sideof the citythat lieth in the midstof the riverof Gad, and towardJazer: Then they cameto Gilead, and tothe landof Tahtim-hodshi; and they cameto Dan-jaan, and abouttoZidon, And cameto the strongholdof Tyre, and to allthe citiesof the Hivites, and of the Canaanites: and they went outtothe south of Judah, even to Beer-sheba. So when they had gonethrough allthe land, they cameto Jerusalemat the endof ninemonthsand twentydays. And Joabgave upthe sumof the numberof the peopleuntothe king: and there werein Israeleighthundredthousandvaliantmenthat drewthe sword; and the menof Judah were fivehundredthousandmen. And David's heartsmotehim afterthathe had numberedthe people. And Davidsaiduntothe LORD, I have sinnedgreatlyin thatI have done: and now, I beseech thee, O LORD, take awaythe iniquityof thy servant; forI have done veryfoolishly. For when Davidwas upin the morning, the wordof the LORDcameuntothe prophetGad, David's seer, saying, Goand sayuntoDavid, Thussaiththe LORD, Iofferthee three things ; choosethee oneofthem, that I may do it unto thee. So GadcametoDavid, and toldhim, and saidunto him, Shall sevenyearsof faminecomeunto thee in thy land? orwilt thou fleethreemonthsbeforethine enemies, while theypursuethee? orthat there bethreedays' pestilencein thy land? nowadvise, and seewhatanswerI shall returnto him that sentme. And DavidsaiduntoGad, I am in a greatstrait: let us fallnowinto the handof the LORD; forhis mercies are great: and let me notfallinto the handof man. So the LORDsenta pestilenceupon Israelfrom the morningeven tothe timeappointed: and there diedofthe peoplefrom Daneven toBeer-sheba seventythousandmen. And when the angelstretched outhis handupon Jerusalemto destroyit, the LORDrepented himofthe evil, and saidto the angelthat destroyedthe people, It is enough: staynowthine hand. And the angelof the LORDwasbythe threshingplaceof Araunahthe Jebusite. And Davidspokeuntothe LORDwhen he sawthe angelthat smotethe people, and said, Lo, Ihave sinned, and Ihave done wickedly: but thesesheep, whathave they done? let thine hand, I pray thee, beagainst me, and against my father's house. And GadcamethatdaytoDavid, and saidunto him, Go up, rearan altarunto the LORDin the threshingfloorof Araunahthe Jebusite. And David, according to the sayingof Gad, went upasthe LORDcommanded. And Araunahlooked, and sawthe kingand his servantscoming ontowardhim: and Araunahwent out, and bowed himselfbefore the kingon his faceupon the ground. And Araunahsaid, Whereforeis my lordthe kingcometohis servant? And Davidsaid, To buythe threshingfloorofthee, to buildan altarunto the LORD, that the plaguemay be stayedfromthe people. And AraunahsaiduntoDavid, Let my lordthe kingtakeand offer upwhat seemeth goodunto him: behold, here be oxenfor burnt sacrifice, and threshing instrumentsand other instrumentsof the oxenfor wood. Allthese things did Araunah, as a king, giveuntothe king. And Araunahsaidunto the king, The LORDthy Godacceptthee. And the kingsaiduntoAraunah, Nay; butI will surely buy it ofthee at a price: neitherwill I offerburnt offeringsunto the LORDmy Godof that whichdoth cost me nothing. So Davidboughtthe threshingfloorand the oxenfor fiftyshekelsof silver. And Davidbuilttherean altarunto the LORD, and offeredburnt offeringsand peace offerings. So the LORDwas entreatedfor the land, and the plaguewas stayedfromIsrael.
