And it came to passin an eveningtide, that Davidarosefrom offhis bed, and walkeduponthe roofof the king's house: and fromthe roofhe sawa womanwashingherself; and the woman was verybeautifulto lookupon. And Davidsentand inquiredafter the woman. And one said, Is notthisBath-sheba, the daughterof Eliam, the wifeof Uriahthe Hittite? And Davidsentmessengers, and tookher; and she camein untohim, and he laywith her; for shewas purifiedfrom her uncleanness: and she returneduntoher house. And the womanconceived, and sentand toldDavid, and said, I am with child. And DavidsenttoJoab, saying , Sendme Uriahthe Hittite. And JoabsentUriahtoDavid. And when Uriahwas comeuntohim, Daviddemanded of him how Joabdid, and how the peopledid, and how the warprospered. And Davidsaidto Uriah, Go downto thy house, and washthy feet. And Uriahdepartedout of the king's house, and there followedhim a mess of meat from the king. But Uriahsleptat the doorof the king's housewithallthe servantsof his lord, and wentnotdown tohis house. And when they had toldDavid, saying, Uriahwent not downuntohis house, DavidsaiduntoUriah, Camestthounotfrom thy journey? why then didst thou notgo downuntothine house? And UriahsaiduntoDavid, The ark, and Israel, and Judah, abidein tents; and my lordJoab, and the servantsof my lord, are encampedinthe openfields; shall Ithen gointomine house, to eatand to drink, and to liewithmy wife? as thou livest, and as thy soulliveth, I will not dothisthing. And DavidsaidtoUriah, Tarryheretodayalso, and tomorrowI will let thee depart. So Uriahabodein Jerusalemthatday, and the morrow. And when Davidhad calledhim, he did eatand drinkbeforehim; and he made him drunk: and at evenhe went outto lieon his bedwiththe servantsof his lord, but wentnotdown tohis house. And it came to passin the morning, that Davidwrotea lettertoJoab, and sent it by the handof Uriah. And he wrotein the letter, saying, Setye Uriahinthe forefrontof the hottestbattle, and retireye fromhim, that he may be smitten, and die. And it came to pass, when Joabobservedthe city, that he assignedUriahuntoa placewherehe knewthatvaliantmen were . And the menof the citywent out, and foughtwithJoab: and there fell some ofthe peopleof the servantsof David; and Uriahthe Hittitediedalso. Then Joabsentand toldDavidallthe thingsconcerning the war; And chargedthe messenger, saying, When thou hast made an endof tellingthe mattersof the waruntothe king, And ifso bethat the king's wratharise, and he sayunto thee, Whereforeapproachedye so nigh untothe citywhen ye did fight? knewye notthatthey would shootfromthe wall? WhosmoteAbimelechthe sonof Jerubbesheth? did nota womancasta pieceof a millstoneuponhim fromthe wall, that he diedin Thebez? whywent ye nighthe wall? then saythou, Thy servantUriahthe Hittiteis deadalso. So the messengerwent, and cameand showedDavidallthatJoabhad senthim for. And the messengersaiduntoDavid, Surelythe menprevailedagainstus, and came outuntous into the field, and we wereuponthem even untothe enteringof the gate. And the shootersshotfrom offthe walluponthy servants; and some of the king's servantsbe dead, and thy servantUriahthe Hittiteis deadalso. Then Davidsaiduntothe messenger, Thusshalt thou sayuntoJoab, Let notthisthingdispleasethee, forthe sworddevourethoneas well as another: make thy battlemore strongagainstthe city, and overthrowit: and encouragethou him. And when the wifeof UriahheardthatUriahher husbandwas dead, she mournedforher husband. And when the mourningwas past, Davidsentand fetchedher tohis house, and she becamehis wife, and borehim a son. But the thingthatDavidhad donedispleasedthe LORD.
