Now it came to passafterthe deathof Saul, when Davidwas returnedfrom the slaughterof the Amalekites, and Davidhad abodetwodaysin Ziklag; It came even to passon the thirdday, that, behold, a mancameout ofthe campfromSaulwith his clothesrent, and earthuponhis head: and so it was, when he cametoDavid, that he fellto the earth, and did obeisance. And Davidsaidunto him, From whencecomestthou? And he saiduntohim, Out of the campof Israelam I escaped. And Davidsaiduntohim, Howwentthe matter? I pray thee, tellme. And he answered, Thatthe peopleare fledfromthe battle, and manyofthe peoplealsoare fallenand dead; and Sauland Jonathanhis sonare deadalso. And Davidsaiduntothe young manthat toldhim, Howknowestthou thatSauland Jonathanhis sonbe dead? And the young manthat toldhim said, As I happenedby chanceupon mountGilboa, behold, Saulleaneduponhis spear; and, lo, the chariotsand horsemenfollowed hardafter him. And when he lookedbehindhim, he sawme, and calleduntome. And I answered, Here am I. And he saidunto me, Who art thou? And I answeredhim, I am an Amalekite. He saiduntome again, Stand, I pray thee, uponme, and slayme: foranguishis comeupon me, becausemy life is yetwholein me. So I stooduponhim, and slewhim, becauseI was surethathe could notliveafter thathe was fallen: and I tookthe crownthat was uponhis head, and the braceletthat was onhis arm, and have broughtthem hitheruntomy lord. Then Davidtook holdon his clothes, and rentthem; and likewiseallthe menthat were withhim: And they mourned, and wept, and fasteduntileven, forSaul, and forJonathanhis son, and forthe peopleof the LORD, and forthe houseof Israel; becausethey were fallenby the sword. And Davidsaiduntothe young manthat toldhim, Whence art thou? And he answered, I am the sonof a stranger, an Amalekite. And Davidsaiduntohim, Howwast thou notafraidto stretch forththine handto destroythe LORD's anointed? And Davidcalledoneof the young men, and said, Go near, and fallupon him. And he smotehim that he died. And Davidsaiduntohim, Thy blood be uponthy head; forthy mouthhath testifiedagainst thee, saying, Ihave slainthe LORD's anointed. And DavidlamentedwiththislamentationoverSauland overJonathanhis son: (Also he badethem teachthe childrenof Judah the use of the bow: behold, it is writteninthe bookof Jasher.) The beautyof Israelis slainuponthy high places: howare the mightyfallen! Tell it notin Gath, publish it notin the streetsof Askelon; lestthe daughtersof the Philistinesrejoice, lestthe daughtersof the uncircumcisedtriumph. Ye mountainsof Gilboa, let there be nodew, neither let there be rain, uponyou, nor fieldsof offerings: fortherethe shieldof the mightyis vilely cast away, the shieldof Saul, as though he had not been anointedwith oil. From the bloodof the slain, from the fatof the mighty, the bowof Jonathanturnednotback, and the swordof Saulreturnednotempty. Sauland Jonathan were lovelyand pleasantin their lives, and in their deaththey were notdivided: they were swifterthan eagles, they were strongerthan lions. Ye daughtersof Israel, weepoverSaul, who clothedyou in scarlet, with other delights, who put onornamentsof golduponyour apparel. Howare the mightyfallenin the midstof the battle! O Jonathan, thou wast slaininthine high places. I am distressedforthee, my brotherJonathan: verypleasanthast thou been unto me: thy loveto me was wonderful, passing the loveof women. Howare the mightyfallen, and the weaponsof warperished!
