Now it came to passin the dayswhen the judgesruled, that there wasa faminein the land. And a certain manof Bethlehem-judah wentto sojournin the countryof Moab, he, and his wife, and his twosons. And the nameof the man was Elimelech, and the nameof his wifeNaomi, and the nameof his twosonsMahlonand Chilion, Ephrathitesof Bethlehem-judah. And they cameinto the countryof Moab, and continuedthere. And ElimelechNaomi's husbanddied; and shewas left, and her twosons. And they tookthem wivesof the women of Moab; the nameof the one was Orpah, and the nameof the otherRuth: and they dwelledthereabout tenyears. And Mahlonand Chiliondiedalsobothof them; and the womanwas leftof her two sonsand her husband. Then shearosewith her daughters-in-law, that she might returnfrom the countryof Moab: forshe had heardin the countryof Moabhow thatthe LORDhad visitedhis peoplein givingthem bread. Wherefore she went forthout ofthe placewhereshe was, and her twodaughters-in-law with her; and they wenton the wayto returnuntothe landof Judah. And Naomisaidunto her twodaughters-in-law, Go, returneachto her mother's house: the LORDdealkindlywithyou, asye have dealtwiththe dead, and withme. The LORDgrantyou that ye may findrest, each of you in the houseof her husband. Then she kissedthem; and they lifted uptheir voice, and wept. And they saidunto her, Surelywe will returnwiththee unto thy people. And Naomisaid, Turn again, my daughters: whywill ye gowithme? are there yet any more sonsin my womb, that they may beyour husbands? Turn again, my daughters, go your way ; forI am too oldto havea husband. IfI should say, I havehope, if I should havea husbandalsotonight, and should alsobearsons; Would ye tarryfor themtillthey were grown? would ye stayfor themfrom havinghusbands? nay, my daughters; forit grievethme muchforyour sakes thatthe handof the LORDis gone outagainst me. And they lifted uptheir voice, and weptagain: and Orpahkissedher mother-in-law; but Ruthcleavedunto her. And she said, Behold, thy sister-in-law is gone backuntoher people, and untoher gods: returnthou afterthy sister-in-law. And Ruthsaid, Entreatme notto leavethee, or to returnfrom following afterthee: forwhitherthou goest, I will go; and wherethou lodgest, I will lodge: thy people shall be my people, and thy Godmy God: Wherethou diest, will I die, and therewill I be buried: the LORDdosoto me, and morealso, if aught butdeathparttheeand me. When she sawthatshewas steadfastly mindedto gowithher, then she leftspeakinguntoher. So they twowentuntilthey cameto Bethlehem. And it came to pass, when they were cometo Bethlehem, that allthe citywas movedaboutthem, and they said, Is thisNaomi? And she saiduntothem, Callme notNaomi, callme Mara: forthe Almightyhath dealt very bitterlywith me. Iwent outfull, and the LORDhath brought me home againempty: why then callye me Naomi, seeing the LORDhath testifiedagainst me, and the Almightyhath afflictedme? So Naomireturned, and Ruththe Moabitess, her daughter-in-law, with her, which returnedout of the countryof Moab: and theycameto Bethlehemin the beginningof barleyharvest.
