Andthey beganto accusehim, saying, We foundthis fellow pervertingthenation, andforbiddingto givetributeto Caesar, sayingthat he himselfisChrista King. AndPilateaskedhim, saying, ArtthoutheKingof theJews? Andheansweredhimand said, Thousayest it. ThensaidPilatetothechief priestsand to thepeople, I findnofaultinthisman. Andtheywere the more fierce, saying, He stirreth upthepeople, teachingthroughoutallJewry, beginningfromGalileetothis place. WhenPilateheardof Galilee, he askedwhetherthemanwerea Galilaean. Andas soon as he knewthathe belonged untoHerod's jurisdiction, he senthimtoHerod, who himselfalsowasatJerusalematthattime. Andwhen HerodsawJesus, he was exceeding glad: forhe wasdesirousto seehimofa long season, because he had heardmany thingsofhim; andhe hopedto have seensomemiracledonebyhim. Thenhe questionedwith himinmanywords; butheansweredhimnothing. Andthechief priestsandscribesstoodand vehementlyaccusedhim. AndHerodwithhismen of warset him at naught, andmocked him, and arrayedhimin a gorgeousrobe, and sent him againto Pilate. Andthe samedayPilateandHerodwere madefriendstogether: forbeforethey wereatenmitybetweenthemselves. AndPilate, when he had called togetherthechief priestsandtherulersandthepeople, Saiduntothem, Ye have broughtthismanunto me, asone that perverteththepeople: and, behold, I, having examined him beforeyou, have foundnofaultinthismantouching those things whereofye accusehim: No, nor yetHerod: forI sentyoutohim; and, lo, nothingworthyof deathisdoneunto him. I will thereforechastisehim, and release him. ( Forof necessityhe mustreleaseoneunto thematthe feast.) Andthey cried outall at once, saying, Awaywith this man, andreleaseunto usBarabbas: ( Whofora certainseditionmadeinthecity, andfor murder, wascastintoprison.) Pilatetherefore, willingto releaseJesus, spake again to them. Buttheycried, saying, Crucify him, crucifyhim. Andhesaiduntothemthe third time, Why, whatevilhath hedone? I have foundnocauseof deathinhim: I will thereforechastisehim, andlet him go. Andtheywere instantwith loudvoices, requiringthat hemight be crucified. Andthevoicesof themandof thechief priestsprevailed. AndPilategave sentencethat it should beas they required. Andhe releasedunto themhim that forseditionandmurderwas castintoprison, whomthey had desired; buthe deliveredJesusto theirwill. Andasthey led him away, they laid hold upononeSimon, a Cyrenian, comingout ofthe country, and on himthey laidthecross, that he might bear it afterJesus. Andthere followedhima greatcompanyof people, andof women, whichalsobewailedandlamentedhim. ButJesusturninguntothemsaid, Daughters of Jerusalem, weepnotforme, butweepforyourselves, andforyourchildren. For, behold, the days are coming, in the which they shall say, Blessed are thebarren, and the wombsthatneverbare, and the papswhichnever gave suck. Then shall they begin to say to themountains, Fallonus; and to thehills, Coverus. Forif they do these thingsin a greentree, what shall be doneinthedry? Andthere were alsotwoother, malefactors, ledwithhimto be put to death. Andwhenthey were cometotheplace, which is calledCalvary, therethey crucifiedhim, andthemalefactors, oneonthe right hand, andthe otheronthe left. ThensaidJesus, Father, forgivethem; for they knownotwhat they do. Andthey partedhisraiment, and castlots. Andthepeoplestoodbeholding. Andtherulersalsowiththemderided him, saying, He savedothers; let him savehimself, ifhebeChrist, thechosenof God. Anda superscriptionalsowaswrittenoverhimin lettersof Greek, andLatin, andHebrew, THISISTHEKINGOF THEJEWS. Andoneof themalefactorswhich were hangedrailed onhim, saying, IfthoubeChrist, savethyselfandus. Buttheotheransweringrebukedhim, saying, Dost notthoufearGod, seeingthou artinthesamecondemnation? Andweindeedjustly; forwe receivethe due rewardof our deeds: butthis manhath donenothingamiss. Andhe saidunto Jesus, Lord, remembermewhenthou comestintothykingdom. AndJesussaidunto him, Verily I say unto thee, Today shalt thou bewithmeinparadise. Andit wasaboutthe sixthhour, andthere wasa darknessoveralltheearthuntilthe ninthhour. Andthesunwas darkened, andtheveilof thetemplewas rentin the midst. Andwhen Jesushad criedwith a loudvoice, he said, Father, intothyhands I commendmyspirit: andhaving saidthus, he gave up the ghost. Nowwhen thecenturionsawwhat was done, he glorifiedGod, saying, Certainlythiswasa righteousman. Andallthepeoplethat came togethertothatsight, beholdingthe things which were done, smotetheirbreasts, and returned. Andallhisacquaintance, andthe womenthat followedhimfromGalilee, stoodafar off, beholdingthese things. And, behold, there was a mannamedJoseph, acounselor; and he was a goodman, anda just: (The samehadnotconsentedto thecounselanddeedof them;) he was ofArimathaea, a cityof theJews: whoalsohimselfwaited forthekingdomof God. This man wentunto Pilate, and beggedthebodyof Jesus. Andhe took it down, and wrappeditin linen, andlaiditina sepulcherthat was hewn in stone, whereinnever manbeforewaslaid. Andthat daywasthe preparation, andthe sabbathdrew on. Andthe womenalso, whichcame withhimfromGalilee, followed after, and beheldthesepulcher, andhowhisbodywas laid. Andthey returned, and preparedspicesandointments; andrestedthesabbath dayaccordingto thecommandment.
