ForHerodhad laid hold onJohn, and boundhim, andput him inprisonfor Herodias' sake, hisbrotherPhilip's wife. ForJohnsaidunto him, It is not lawfulfor theeto haveher. Andwhen he wouldhave put him to death, he fearedthemultitude, becausethey countedhimasa prophet. Butwhen Herod's birthdaywas kept, thedaughterof Herodiasdancedbefore them, andpleasedHerod. Whereuponhe promisedwithan oathto giveherwhatsoevershe would ask. Andshe, being before instructedofhermother, said, GivemehereJohnBaptist's headina charger. Andthekingwas sorry: neverthelessfor the oath's sake, andthem which sat with him at meat, he commanded it to be given her. Andhe sent, and beheadedJohnintheprison. Andhisheadwas broughtina charger, andgivento thedamsel: andshe brought it to hermother. Andhisdisciplescame, and took upthebody, andburiedit, andwentand toldJesus. WhenJesusheard of it, he departedthencebyshipintoa desertplaceapart: andwhen thepeoplehad heard thereof, they followedhimon footout ofthecities. AndJesuswent forth, and sawa greatmultitude, andwas moved with compassiontowardthem, andhe healedtheirsick. Andwhen it wasevening, hisdisciplescameto him, saying, This isa desertplace, andthetimeis nowpast; send the multitude away, thatthey may gointothevillages, andbuythemselvesvictuals. ButJesussaidunto them, They neednotdepart; giveyethem to eat. Andtheysayunto him, We haveherebutfiveloaves, andtwofishes. Hesaid, Bringthemhither to me. Andhe commandedthemultitudeto sit downonthegrass, andtookthefiveloaves, andthetwofishes, and looking uptoheaven, he blessed, andbroke, andgavetheloavesto his disciples, andthedisciplesto themultitude. Andthey did alleat, andwere filled: andthey took upof thefragmentsthat remainedtwelvebasketsfull. Andthey that had eatenwereaboutfive thousandmen, besidewomenandchildren. AndstraightwayJesusconstrainedhisdisciplesto getintoa ship, andto gobeforehimuntotheother side, whilehe sent the multitudes away. Andwhen he had sent the multitudes away, he went upintoa mountainapartto pray: andwhen the eveningwas come, he wastherealone. Buttheshipwasnowin the midstof thesea, tossedwithwaves: forthewindwascontrary. Andin the fourthwatchof thenightJesuswentuntothem, walkingonthesea. Andwhen thedisciplessawhimwalkingonthesea, they were troubled, saying, It isa spirit; andthey cried outforfear. ButstraightwayJesusspakeunto them, saying, Be of good cheer; it isI; be not afraid. AndPeteransweredhimand said, Lord, ifit bethou, bidmecomeuntotheeonthewater. Andhesaid, Come. Andwhen Peterwas come downout oftheship, he walkedonthewater, to gotoJesus. Butwhen he sawthewindboisterous, he was afraid; andbeginningto sink, he cried, saying, Lord, saveme. AndimmediatelyJesusstretched forth his hand, and caughthim, andsaidunto him, O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt? Andwhen theywere comeintotheship, thewindceased. Thentheythat were intheshipcameand worshipedhim, saying, Of a truththou artthe Sonof God. Andwhen they were gone over, they cameintothelandof Gennesaret. Andwhen themenof thatplacehad knowledgeof him, they sent outintoallthatcountry round about, andbroughtunto himallthat were diseased; Andbesoughthimthatthey might onlytouchthehemof hisgarment: andas many astouchedwere made perfectly whole.
