Now these are the nationswhichthe LORDleft, to proveIsraelby them, even as many of Israel as had notknownallthe warsof Canaan; Onlythatthe generationsof the childrenof Israelmight know, to teachthem war, at the leastsuch asbeforeknewnothingthereof; Namely , fivelordsof the Philistines, and allthe Canaanites, and the Sidonians, and the Hivitesthat dweltin mountLebanon, from mountBaal-hermon untothe entering inof Hamath. And they wereto proveIsraelby them, to knowwhether they would hearkenunto the commandmentsof the LORD, whichhe commandedtheir fathersby the handof Moses. And the childrenof Israeldweltamongthe Canaanites, Hittites, and Amorites, and Perizzites, and Hivites, and Jebusites: And they tooktheir daughtersto be their wives, and gavetheir daughtersto their sons, and servedtheir gods. And the childrenof Israeldidevilin the sightof the LORD, and forgotthe LORDtheir God, and servedBaalimand the groves. Therefore the angerof the LORDwas hotagainst Israel, and he soldthem into the handof Cushan-rishathaim kingof Mesopotamia: and the childrenof IsraelservedCushan-rishathaim eightyears. And when the childrenof Israelcrieduntothe LORD, the LORDraised upa delivererto the childrenof Israel, who deliveredthem, even Othnielthe sonof Kenaz, Caleb's youngerbrother. And the Spiritof the LORDcameuponhim, and he judgedIsrael, and went outto war: and the LORDdeliveredCushan-rishathaim kingof Mesopotamiainto his hand; and his handprevailedagainstCushan-rishathaim. And the landhad restfortyyears. And Othnielthe sonof Kenazdied. And the childrenof Israeldidevilagainin the sightof the LORD: and the LORDstrengthenedEglonthe kingof MoabagainstIsrael, becausethey had doneevilin the sightof the LORD. And he gathereduntohim the childrenof Ammonand Amalek, and wentand smoteIsrael, and possessedthe cityof palm trees. So the childrenof IsraelservedEglonthe kingof Moabeighteenyears. But when the childrenof Israelcrieduntothe LORD, the LORDraised them upa deliverer, Ehudthe sonof Gera, a Benjamite, a manleft-handed: and by himthe childrenof Israelsenta presentunto Eglonthe kingof Moab. But Ehudmadehim a daggerwhich had twoedges, of a cubitlength; and he did girdit underhis raimentuponhis rightthigh. And he broughtthe presentunto Eglonkingof Moab: and Eglon was a veryfatman. And whenhe had made an endto offerthe present, he sent awaythe peoplethat borethe present. But hehimself turned againfromthe quarriesthat were byGilgal, and said, I have a secreterrandunto thee, O king: who said, Keep silence. And allthat stoodby him went outfromhim. And Ehudcameuntohim; and hewas sittingin a summerparlor, whichhe had for himself alone. And Ehudsaid, I have a messagefrom Goduntothee. And he aroseout of his seat. And Ehudput forthhis lefthand, and tookthe daggerfromhis rightthigh, and thrustit into his belly: And the haftalsowent inafterthe blade; and the fatcloseduponthe blade, so thathe could notdrawthe daggerout of his belly; and the dirtcame out. Then Ehudwent forththrough the porch, and shutthe doorsof the parlorupon him, and lockedthem. When hewas gone out, his servantscame; and when they sawthat, behold, the doorsof the parlor were locked, they said, Surelyhecoverethhis feetin his summerchamber. And they tarriedtillthey were ashamed: and, behold, he openednotthe doorsof the parlor; therefore they tooka key, and opened them : and, behold, their lord was fallen downdeadon the earth. And Ehudescapedwhilethey tarried, and passed beyondthe quarries, and escapedunto Seirath. And it came to pass, when he was come, that he blewa trumpetin the mountainof Ephraim, and the childrenof Israelwent downwithhim fromthe mount, and hebeforethem. And he saiduntothem, Followafterme: forthe LORDhath deliveredyour enemiesthe Moabitesinto your hand. And they went downafterhim, and tookthe fordsof Jordantoward Moab, and sufferednota manto pass over. And they slewof Moabat thattimeabout tenthousandmen, alllusty, and allmenof valor; and there escapednota man. So Moabwas subduedthatdayunderthe handof Israel. And the landhad restfourscoreyears. And afterhim wasShamgarthe sonof Anath, which slewof the Philistinessixhundredmenwith an oxgoad: and healsodeliveredIsrael.
