Nowwhen Festuswas come intotheprovince, afterthreedayshe ascendedfromCaesareatoJerusalem. Thenthehigh priestandthechiefof theJewsinformedhimagainstPaul, andbesoughthim, And desiredfavoragainsthim, thathe would send forhimtoJerusalem, laying waitinthewayto killhim. ButFestusanswered, that Paulshould be keptatCaesarea, andthat he himselfwoulddepartshortly thither. Let themtherefore, saidhe, which amongyouare able, go down with me, and accusethisman, if there be anywickednessinhim. Andwhen he had tarriedamongthemmorethantendays, he went downuntoCaesarea; and thenext daysittingonthejudgment seatcommandedPaulto be brought. Andwhen hewas come, theJewswhich came downfromJerusalemstood round about, and laidmanyandgrievouscomplaintsagainstPaul, whichthey couldnotprove. While heanswered for himself, Neitheragainstthelawof theJews, neitheragainstthetemple, noryet againstCaesar, have I offendedany thingat all. ButFestus, willingto dotheJewsa pleasure, answeredPaul, and said, Wiltthou go uptoJerusalem, and therebe judgedofthese thingsbeforeme? ThensaidPaul, I standatCaesar's judgment seat, whereIoughtto be judged: to the Jewshave I done no wrong, asthouvery wellknowest. ForifIbe an offender, orhave committedany thingworthyof death, I refusenotto die: butifthere benoneof these things whereoftheseaccuseme, no manmaydelivermeunto them. I appealunto Caesar. ThenFestus, when he had conferredwiththecouncil, answered, Hast thou appealedunto Caesar? untoCaesarshalt thou go. AndaftercertaindayskingAgrippaandBernicecameuntoCaesareato saluteFestus. Andwhenthey had beentheremanydays, FestusdeclaredPaul's causeunto theking, saying, There isa certainmanleft in bondsbyFelix: Aboutwhom, when IwasatJerusalem, thechief priestsandtheeldersof theJewsinformed me, desiring to have judgmentagainsthim. Andbecause Idoubtedofsuch manner of questions, I asked him whetherhe wouldgotoJerusalem, and therebe judgedofthese matters. Butwhen Paulhad appealedto bereserveduntothehearingof Augustus, I commandedhimto be kepttillI might sendhimtoCaesar. ThenAgrippasaiduntoFestus, I wouldalsohearthemanmyself. Tomorrow, saidhe, thou shalt hearhim. Andon themorrow, when Agrippawas come, andBernice, withgreatpomp, andwas enteredintotheplace of hearing, withthechief captains, andprincipalmenofthecity, atFestus' commandmentPaulwas brought forth. AndFestussaid, KingAgrippa, andallmenwhich are here presentwith us, ye seethis man, aboutwhomallthemultitudeof theJewshave dealtwith me, bothatJerusalem, and also here, cryingthat heoughtnotto liveany longer. Butwhen Ifoundthat hehad committednothingworthyof death, andthat hehimselfhathappealedto Augustus, I have determinedto sendhim. OfwhomI havenocertain thingto writeunto my lord. WhereforeI have brought him forthbeforeyou, andespeciallybeforethee, O kingAgrippa, that, after examinationhad, I might havesomewhatto write. Forit seemethto meunreasonableto senda prisoner, andnotwithalto signifythecrimes laid againsthim.
