Nowa certain man wassick, named Lazarus, ofBethany, thetownof MaryandhersisterMartha. ( Itwas that Marywhich anointedtheLordwith ointment, andwipedhisfeetwith herhair, whosebrotherLazaruswas sick.) Thereforehis sisterssentuntohim, saying, Lord, behold, he whomthou lovestis sick. WhenJesusheard that, he said, Thissicknessisnotuntodeath, butfortheglory of God, thattheSon of God might be glorifiedthereby. NowJesuslovedMartha, andhersister, andLazarus. Whenhe had heardthereforethathe was sick, he abodetwodaysstillinthe sameplacewhere he was. Thenafterthatsaithhe to his disciples, Let us gointoJudeaagain. His disciplessayunto him, Master, theJewsof latesoughtto stonethee; andgoestthou thitheragain? Jesusanswered, Are there nottwelvehours in theday? If any manwalkintheday, he stumblethnot, because he seeththelight of thisworld. Butif a manwalkinthenight, he stumbleth, because there isnolightinhim. These thingssaidhe: andafterthathe saithunto them, OurfriendLazarussleepeth; but I go, that I may awake him out of sleep. Thensaidhisdisciples, Lord, ifhe sleep, he shall do well. HowbeitJesusspakeofhisdeath: buttheythoughtthathe had spokenoftaking of restin sleep. ThensaidJesusunto themplainly, Lazarus is dead. And I am glad for your sakesthat I wasnotthere, to the intent ye may believe; nevertheless let us gountohim. ThensaidThomas, which is calledDidymus, unto his fellow disciples, Let usalsogo, thatwe may diewithhim. Thenwhen Jesuscame, he foundthathe had lain inthegravefourdaysalready. NowBethanywasnigh untoJerusalem, aboutfifteenfurlongsoff: AndmanyoftheJewscametoMarthaandMary, tocomfortthemconcerningtheirbrother. ThenMartha, as soon asshe heardthatJesuswas coming, went and methim: butMarysat still inthehouse. ThensaidMarthauntoJesus, Lord, ifthou hadst beenhere, mybrotherhad notdied. ButI know, thatevennow, whatsoeverthou wilt askof God, Godwill give it thee. Jesussaithunto her, Thybrother shall rise again. Marthasaithunto him, I knowthathe shall rise againintheresurrectionatthelastday. Jesussaidunto her, Iamtheresurrection, andthelife: he that believethinme, though he were dead, yet shall he live: Andwhosoeverlivethandbelievethinme shall neverdie. Believest thou this? She saithunto him, Yea, Lord: IbelievethatthouarttheChrist, theSonof God, which should comeintotheworld. Andwhen she had sosaid, she went her way, andcalledMaryhersistersecretly, saying, TheMasteris come, andcallethfor thee. As soon assheheard that, she arosequickly, andcameuntohim. NowJesuswas not yetcomeintothetown, butwasinthat placewhereMarthamethim. TheJewsthenwhich werewithherinthehouse, andcomfortedher, when they sawMary, thatshe rose uphastilyandwent out, followedher, saying, She goethuntothegravetoweepthere. ThenwhenMarywas comewhereJesuswas, and sawhim, she fell downathisfeet, sayingunto him, Lord, ifthou hadst beenhere, mybrotherhad notdied. WhenJesusthereforesawherweeping, andtheJewsalso weepingwhich came withher, he groanedin thespirit, andwas troubled. Andsaid, Where have ye laid him? Theysaidunto him, Lord, comeandsee. Jesuswept. ThensaidtheJews, Beholdhowhe lovedhim! Andsomeofthemsaid, Couldnotthis man, which openedtheeyesof theblind, have causedthateventhis manshould nothave died? Jesusthereforeagaingroaninginhimselfcomethtothegrave. Itwasa cave, anda stonelayuponit. Jesussaid, Take ye awaythestone. Martha, thesisterof him that was dead, saithunto him, Lord, by this timehe stinketh: forhe hath been dead four days. Jesussaithunto her, Said I not unto thee, that, if thou wouldest believe, thou shouldest seetheglory of God? Thenthey took awaythestone from the place wherethedeadwaslaid. AndJesusliftedup his eyes, andsaid, Father, I thanktheethat thou hast heardme. AndIknewthat thou hearestmealways: butbecause of thepeople which stand by I said it, that they may believethatthou hast sentme. Andwhen he thushad spoken, he criedwith a loudvoice, Lazarus, comeforth. Andhe that was deadcame forth, boundhandandfootwith graveclothes: andhisfacewas bound aboutwith a napkin. Jesussaithunto them, Loosehim, andlet him go. ThenmanyoftheJewswhich cametoMary, andhad seenthe things whichJesusdid, believedonhim. Butsomeofthemwent their waystothePharisees, andtoldthemwhat thingsJesushad done. Thengatheredthechief priestsandthePhariseesa council, andsaid, Whatdowe? forthismandoethmanymiracles. Ifwe let him thus alone, all men will believeonhim: andtheRomansshall comeandtake awaybothourplaceandnation. Andoneofthem, named Caiaphas, beingthe high priestthat sameyear, saidunto them, Yeknownothing at all, Norconsiderthatit is expedientfor us, thatonemanshould dieforthepeople, andthat thewholenationperishnot. Andthisspakehe notofhimself: butbeinghigh priestthatyear, he prophesiedthatJesusshoulddieforthat nation; Andnotforthat nationonly, butthatalsohe should gather togetherinonethechildrenof Godthat were scattered abroad. Thenfromthatdayforth they took counsel togetherfor toput him to death. JesusthereforewalkednomoreopenlyamongtheJews; butwentthenceuntoa countrynear tothewilderness, intoa citycalledEphraim, and therecontinuedwithhisdisciples. AndtheJews' passoverwasnigh at hand: andmanywent out of the country uptoJerusalembeforethepassover, topurifythemselves. Thensoughtthey for Jesus, andspakeamongthemselves, as they stoodinthetemple, Whatthinkye, thathe will notcometothefeast? Nowboththechief priestsandthePhariseeshad givena commandment, that, ifany manknewwherehe were, he should show it, thatthey might takehim.
