There wasa manin the landof Uz, whose name was Job; and thatmanwasperfectand upright, and one that fearedGod, and eschewedevil. And there were bornunto him sevensonsand threedaughters. His substancealso wasseventhousandsheep, and threethousandcamels, and fivehundredyokeof oxen, and fivehundredshe asses, and a verygreathousehold; so that thismanwasthe greatestof allthe menof the east. And his sonswentand feasted in their houses, every onehis day; and sentand calledfor their threesistersto eatand to drinkwiththem. And it wasso, whenthe daysof their feastingwere gone about, that Jobsentand sanctifiedthem, and rose up earlyin the morning, and offeredburnt offerings according to the numberof them all: forJobsaid, It may bethat my sonshave sinned, and cursedGodin their hearts. ThusdidJobcontinually. Now there wasa daywhen the sonsof Godcameto present themselvesbeforethe LORD, and Satancamealsoamongthem. And the LORDsaiduntoSatan, Whencecomestthou? Then Satanansweredthe LORD, and said, From going to and froin the earth, and from walking up and downin it. And the LORDsaiduntoSatan, Hast thou consideredmy servantJob, that there is nonelike himin the earth, a perfectand an uprightman, one that fearethGod, and eschewethevil? Then Satanansweredthe LORD, and said, Doth JobfearGodfor naught? Hast notthoumade a hedgeabouthim, and abouthis house, and aboutallthathe hath on every side? thou hast blessedthe workof his hands, and his substanceis increasedin the land. Butput forththine handnow, and touchallthathe hath, andhe will cursethee tothy face. And the LORDsaiduntoSatan, Behold, allthathe hath is in thy power; onlyuponhimself put not forththine hand. So Satanwent forthfromthe presenceof the LORD. And there wasa daywhen his sonsand his daughters were eatingand drinkingwinein their eldestbrother's house: And there camea messengeruntoJob, and said, The oxenwereplowing, and the assesfeedingbesidethem: And the Sabeansfell upon them , and took them away; yea, they have slainthe servantswith the edgeof the sword; and Ionlyam escapedaloneto tellthee. While he was yetspeaking, there camealso another, and said, The fireof Godis fallenfromheaven, and hath burned upthe sheep, and the servants, and consumedthem; and Ionlyam escapedaloneto tellthee. While he was yetspeaking, there camealso another, and said, The Chaldeansmadeout threebands, and felluponthe camels, and have carried them away, yea, and slainthe servantswith the edgeof the sword; and Ionlyam escapedaloneto tellthee. While he was yetspeaking, there camealso another, and said, Thy sonsand thy daughters were eatingand drinkingwinein their eldestbrother's house: And, behold, there camea greatwindfromthe wilderness, and smotethe fourcornersof the house, and it felluponthe young men, and they are dead; and Ionlyam escapedaloneto tellthee. Then Jobarose, and renthis mantle, and shavedhis head, and fell downupon the ground, and worshiped, And said, Nakedcame I outof my mother's womb, and nakedshall I returnthither: the LORDgave, and the LORDhath taken away; blessedbethe nameof the LORD.
