Now the daysof Daviddrew nighthat he should die; and he chargedSolomonhis son, saying, Igothe wayof allthe earth: be thou strongtherefore, and showthyself a man; And keepthe chargeof the LORDthy God, to walkin his ways, to keephis statutes, and his commandments, and his judgments, and his testimonies, as it is writtenin the lawof Moses, thatthou mayest prosperin allthatthou doest, and whithersoeverthou turnestthyself: Thatthe LORDmay continuehis wordwhichhe spokeconcerningme, saying, Ifthy childrentake heedto their way, to walkbeforeme in truthwith alltheir heartand with alltheir soul, there shall notfailthee (said he) a manonthe throneof Israel. Moreoverthouknowestalso whatJoabthe sonof Zeruiahdidto me, and whathe didto the twocaptainsof the hostsof Israel, unto Abnerthe sonof Ner, and unto Amasathe sonof Jether, whom he slew, and shedthe bloodof warin peace, and putthe bloodof warupon his girdlethat was about his loins, and in his shoesthat were on his feet. Dotherefore according to thy wisdom, and let nothis hoar headgo downto the gravein peace. But showkindnessunto the sonsof Barzillaithe Gileadite, and let them beof those that eatat thy table: forsothey cametome when I fledbecauseof Absalomthy brother. And, behold, thou hast withthee Shimeithe sonof Gera, a Benjamiteof Bahurim, whichcursedme with a grievouscursein the daywhen I wentto Mahanaim: but hecame downto meetme at Jordan, and I sworeto him by the LORD, saying, I will notput thee to deathwith the sword. Nowtherefore hold him not guiltless: forthou art a wiseman, and knowestwhatthou oughtest to dounto him; but his hoar headbring thou downto the gravewith blood. So Davidsleptwithhis fathers, and was buriedin the cityof David. And the daysthatDavidreignedoverIsrael were fortyyears: sevenyearsreignedhe in Hebron, and thirtyand threeyearsreignedhe in Jerusalem. Then satSolomonuponthe throneof Davidhis father; and his kingdomwas establishedgreatly. And Adonijahthe sonof HaggithcametoBath-sheba the motherof Solomon. And she said, Comestthou peaceably? And he said, Peaceably. He saidmoreover, I have somewhat to sayuntothee. And she said, Say on. And he said, Thouknowestthatthe kingdomwasmine, and that allIsraelsettheir facesonme, that I should reign: howbeit the kingdomis turned about, and is becomemy brother's: forit washis from the LORD. And nowIaskonepetitionofthee, denyme not. And she saiduntohim, Say on. And he said, Speak, I pray thee, unto Solomonthe king, ( forhe will notsay thee nay,) that he giveme Abishagthe Shunammiteto wife. And Bath-sheba said, Well; Iwill speakforthee untothe king. Bath-sheba therefore wentuntokingSolomon, to speakunto him forAdonijah. And the kingrose upto meether, and bowed himselfunto her, and sat downonhis throne, and caused a seatto be setfor the king's mother; and she saton his right hand. Then she said, Idesireonesmallpetitionofthee; I pray thee , say me not nay. And the kingsaidunto her, Ask on, my mother: forI will notsay thee nay. And she said, Let Abishagthe Shunammitebe givento Adonijahthy brotherto wife. And kingSolomonansweredand saidunto his mother, And whydost thouaskAbishagthe Shunammitefor Adonijah? askfor him the kingdomalso; forhe is mineelderbrother; even for him, and for Abiatharthe priest, and for Joabthe sonof Zeruiah. Then kingSolomonsworeby the LORD, saying, Goddosoto me, and morealso, ifAdonijahhave not spokenthiswordagainst his own life. Nowtherefore, as the LORDliveth, whichhath establishedme, and setme onthe throneof Davidmy father, and whohath mademe a house, ashe promised, Adonijahshall be put to deaththis day. And kingSolomonsentby the handof Benaiahthe sonof Jehoiada; and he fellupon him that he died. And unto Abiatharthe priestsaidthe king, Getthee to Anathoth, untothine own fields; forthou art worthyof death: but I will notat thistimeput thee to death, becausethou didst bearthe arkof the LordGODbeforeDavidmy father, and becausethou hast been afflictedin allwhereinmy fatherwas afflicted. So Solomonthrust outAbiatharfrom beingpriestunto the LORD; that he might fulfillthe wordof the LORD, whichhe spokeconcerningthe houseof Eliin Shiloh. Then tidingscametoJoab: forJoabhad turnedafterAdonijah, though he turnednotafterAbsalom. And Joabfleduntothe tabernacleof the LORD, and caught holdon the hornsof the altar. And it was toldkingSolomonthatJoabwas fleduntothe tabernacleof the LORD; and, behold, he is bythe altar. Then SolomonsentBenaiahthe sonof Jehoiada, saying, Go, fallupon him. And Benaiahcametothe tabernacleof the LORD, and saiduntohim, Thussaiththe king, Come forth. And he said, Nay; butI will diehere. And Benaiahbroughtthe kingwordagain, saying, ThussaidJoab, and thushe answeredme. And the kingsaidunto him, Doashe hath said, and fallupon him, and buryhim; that thou mayest take awaythe innocentblood, whichJoabshed, fromme, and fromthe houseof my father. And the LORDshall returnhis blooduponhis own head, whofellupon twomenmore righteousand betterthanhe, and slewthem with the sword, my fatherDavidnotknowing thereof, to wit , Abnerthe sonof Ner, captainof the hostof Israel, and Amasathe sonof Jether, captainof the hostof Judah. Their bloodshall therefore returnupon the headof Joab, and upon the headof his seedforever: but upon David, and upon his seed, and upon his house, and upon his throne, shall there bepeaceforeverfromthe LORD. So Benaiahthe sonof Jehoiadawent up, and fellupon him, and slewhim: and he was buriedin his own housein the wilderness. And the kingputBenaiahthe sonof Jehoiadain his roomoverthe host: and Zadokthe priestdid the kingputin the roomof Abiathar. And the kingsentand calledfor Shimei, and saidunto him, Buildthee a housein Jerusalem, and dwellthere, and go not forththenceanywhither. For it shall be, that on the daythou goest out, and passest overthe brookKidron, thou shalt knowfor certainthatthou shalt surely die: thy bloodshall beupon thine own head. And Shimeisaidunto the king, The saying is good: asmy lordthe kinghath said, sowill thy servantdo. And Shimeidweltin Jerusalemmanydays. And it came to passat the endof threeyears, that twoof the servantsof Shimeiran awayuntoAchishsonof Maachahkingof Gath. And they toldShimei, saying, Behold, thy servants be in Gath. And Shimeiarose, and saddledhis ass, and wentto GathtoAchishto seekhis servants: and Shimeiwent, and broughthis servantsfrom Gath. And it was toldSolomonthatShimeihad gonefrom Jerusalemto Gath, and was come again. And the kingsentand calledfor Shimei, and saiduntohim, Did I notmake thee to swearby the LORD, and protestedunto thee, saying, Know for a certain, on the daythou goest out, and walkest abroadanywhither, thatthou shalt surely die? and thou saidstuntome, The word that I have heard is good. Whythen hast thou notkeptthe oathof the LORD, and the commandmentthatI have chargedtheewith? The kingsaidmoreover toShimei, Thouknowestallthe wickednesswhichthine heartis privy to, thatthou didstto Davidmy father: therefore the LORDshall returnthy wickednessupon thine own head; And kingSolomon shall be blessed, and the throneof Davidshall beestablishedbeforethe LORDforever. So the kingcommandedBenaiahthe sonof Jehoiada; which went out, and fellupon him, that he died. And the kingdomwas establishedin the handof Solomon.
