Andallthe menwereabouttwelve. Andhe wentintothesynagogue, and spake boldlyfor the space ofthreemonths, disputingandpersuadingthe thingsconcerningthekingdomof God. Butwhendiverswere hardened, andbelieved not, but spake evilof that waybeforethemultitude, he departedfromthem, and separatedthedisciples, disputingdailyintheschoolof oneTyrannus. Andthiscontinuedby the space oftwoyears; so thatallthey which dweltin Asiaheardthewordof theLordJesus, bothJewsandGreeks. Manyof them also which usedcurious artsbrought their books together, and burnedthem beforeall men : andthey countedthepriceof them, andfound it fifty thousand pieces of silver. Afterthese thingswere ended, Paulpurposedinthespirit, when he had passed throughMacedoniaandAchaia, to gotoJerusalem, saying, After Ihave beenthere, ImustalsoseeRome. Sohe sentintoMacedoniatwoof them that ministeredunto him, TimothyandErastus; but hehimself stayedinAsiafor a season. Andthe sametimethere arosenosmallstiraboutthat way. Fora certain man namedDemetrius, a silversmith, which madesilvershrinesfor Diana, broughtnosmallgainunto thecraftsmen; Whomhe called togetherwiththeworkmenoflike occupation, and said, Sirs, ye knowthatbythiscraftwe haveourwealth. Andwhen they heard these sayings, they werefullof wrath, andcried out, saying, Great is Dianaof the Ephesians. Andthewholecitywas filledwith confusion: andhaving caughtGaiusandAristarchus, men of Macedonia, Paul's companions in travel, they rushedwith one accordintothetheater. Andwhen Paulwouldhave entered inuntothepeople, thedisciplessufferedhimnot. Some therefore cried one thing, and someanother: fortheassemblywasconfused; andthemore partknewnotwhereforethey were come together. Andthey drewAlexanderout ofthemultitude, theJewsputting him forward. AndAlexanderbeckonedwith thehand, and wouldhave made his defenseunto thepeople. Butwhen they knewthathe wasa Jew, all with one voiceabout the space oftwohourscried out, Great is Dianaof the Ephesians. Andwhen thetown clerkhad appeasedthepeople, he said, Ye menof Ephesus, whatmanisthere thatknowethnothow that thecityof the Ephesiansisa worshiperof thegreatgoddessDiana, andof the image which fell down from Jupiter? Seeing thenthat these thingscannot be spoken against, yeoughtto bequiet, andto donothingrashly.
