And the LORDspokeuntoMoses, saying, Sendthou men, that they may searchthe landof Canaan, whichIgiveunto the childrenof Israel: of every tribeof their fathersshall ye sendaman, every onea ruleramong them. And Mosesbythe commandmentof the LORDsentthem from the wildernessof Paran: allthosemen were headsof the childrenof Israel. And these were their names: of the tribeof Reuben, Shammuathe sonof Zaccur. Of the tribeof Simeon, Shaphatthe sonof Hori. Of the tribeof Judah, Calebthe sonof Jephunneh. Of the tribeof Issachar, Igalthe sonof Joseph. Of the tribeof Ephraim, Osheathe sonof Nun. Of the tribeof Benjamin, Paltithe sonof Raphu. Of the tribeof Zebulun, Gaddielthe sonof Sodi. Of the tribeof Joseph, namely , of the tribeof Manasseh, Gaddithe sonof Susi. Of the tribeof Dan, Ammielthe sonof Gemalli. Of the tribeof Asher, Sethurthe sonof Michael. Of the tribeof Naphtali, Nahbithe sonof Vophsi. Of the tribeof Gad, Geuelthe sonof Machi. These are the namesof the menwhichMosessentto spy outthe land. And MosescalledOsheathe sonof NunJoshua. And Mosessentthem to spy outthe landof Canaan, and saiduntothem, Get you upthis way southward, and go upintothe mountain: And seethe land, whatit is ; and the peoplethat dwelleththerein, whether they be strongor weak, fewormany; And whatthe land is thattheydwellin whether it be goodorbad; and whatcities they be thattheydwellin, whether in tents, orin strongholds; And whatthe land is , whether it be fatorlean, whether there bewoodtherein, ornot. And be ye of good courage, and bringof the fruitof the land. Now the time was the timeof the firstripegrapes. So they went up, and searchedthe landfrom the wildernessof ZinuntoRehob, as men cometo Hamath. And they ascendedby the south, and cameuntoHebron; whereAhiman, Sheshai, and Talmai, the childrenof Anak, were . (Now Hebronwas builtsevenyearsbeforeZoanin Egypt.) And they cameuntothe brookof Eshcol, and cut downfrom thencea branchwith oneclusterof grapes, and they boreit between twoupon a staff; and they brought ofthe pomegranates, and ofthe figs. The placewas calledthe brookEshcol, becauseof the cluster of grapeswhichthe childrenof Israelcut downfrom thence. And they returnedfrom searchingof the landafterfortydays. And they wentand cametoMoses, and toAaron, and toallthe congregationof the childrenof Israel, untothe wildernessof Paran, to Kadesh; and brought backwordunto them, and unto allthe congregation, and showedthem the fruitof the land. And they toldhim, and said, We cameuntothe landwhitherthou sentestus, and surelyitflowethwith milkand honey; and this is the fruitof it. Neverthelessthe people be strongthat dwellin the land, and the cities are walled, and verygreat: and moreoverwe sawthe childrenof Anakthere. The Amalekitesdwellin the landof the south: and the Hittites, and the Jebusites, and the Amorites, dwellin the mountains: and the Canaanitesdwellbythe sea, and bythe coastof Jordan. And Calebstilledthe peoplebeforeMoses, and said, Let us go up at once, and possessit; forwe are well ableto overcomeit. But the menthatwent upwithhim said, We be not ableto go upagainstthe people; forthey are strongerthanwe. And they brought upan evil reportof the landwhichthey had searcheduntothe childrenof Israel, saying, The land, through whichwe have goneto searchit, is a landthateateth upthe inhabitantsthereof; and allthe peoplethatwe sawinit are menof a great stature. And therewe sawthe giants, the sonsof Anak, which come ofthe giants: and we werein our own sightas grasshoppers, and sowe werein their sight.
