And kingZedekiahthe sonof Josiahreignedinsteadof Coniahthe sonof Jehoiakim, whomNebuchadnezzarkingof Babylonmade kingin the landof Judah. But neitherhe, nor his servants, nor the peopleof the land, did hearkenuntothe wordsof the LORD, whichhe spokebythe prophetJeremiah. And Zedekiahthe kingsentJehucalthe sonof Shelemiahand Zephaniahthe sonof Maaseiahthe priesttothe prophetJeremiah, saying, Praynowuntothe LORDour Godforus. Now Jeremiahcame inand went outamongthe people: for they had notputhim into prison. Then Pharaoh's armywas come forthout of Egypt: and when the Chaldeansthat besiegedJerusalemheardtidingsof them, they departedfromJerusalem. Then camethe wordof the LORDuntothe prophetJeremiah, saying, Thussaiththe LORD, the Godof Israel; Thusshall ye saytothe kingof Judah, that sentyou untome to inquireof me; Behold, Pharaoh's army, which is come forthto helpyou, shall returnto Egyptinto their own land. And the Chaldeansshall come again, and fightagainstthiscity, and takeit, and burnit with fire. Thussaiththe LORD; Deceivenotyourselves, saying, The Chaldeansshall surely departfromus: forthey shall notdepart. Forthoughye had smittenthe wholearmyof the Chaldeansthat fightagainstyou, and there remained but woundedmenamong them, yet should they riseevery manin his tent, and burnthiscitywith fire. And it came to pass, that when the armyof the Chaldeanswas broken upfromJerusalemfor fearof Pharaoh's army, Then Jeremiahwent forthout of Jerusalemto gointo the landof Benjamin, to separate himselfthencein the midstof the people. And when hewasin the gateof Benjamin, a captainof the ward was there, whose name was Irijah, the sonof Shelemiah, the sonof Hananiah; and he tookJeremiahthe prophet, saying, Thoufallest awaytothe Chaldeans. Then saidJeremiah, It is false; I fallnotaway tothe Chaldeans. But he hearkenednottohim: so IrijahtookJeremiah, and broughthim tothe princes. Wherefore the princeswere wrothwithJeremiah, and smotehim, and puthim in prisonin the houseof Jonathanthe scribe: forthey had madethat the prison. WhenJeremiahwas enteredintothe dungeon, and intothe cabins, and Jeremiahhad remainedtheremanydays; Then Zedekiahthe kingsent, and tookhim out: and the kingaskedhim secretlyin his house, and said, Is there any wordfromthe LORD? And Jeremiahsaid, There is: for, saidhe, thou shalt be deliveredinto the handof the kingof Babylon. Moreover JeremiahsaiduntokingZedekiah, Whathave I offendedagainst thee, or against thy servants, or against thispeople, thatye have putme inprison? Where are now your prophetswhichprophesiedunto you, saying, The kingof Babylonshall notcomeagainstyou, nor againstthisland? Therefore hearnow, I pray thee, O my lordthe king: let my supplication, I pray thee, be acceptedbeforethee; that thou cause me notto returnto the houseof Jonathanthe scribe, lestI diethere. Then Zedekiahthe kingcommandedthat they should commitJeremiahinto the courtof the prison, and that they should givehim dailya pieceof breadout of the bakers' street, untilallthe breadinthe citywere spent. Thus Jeremiahremainedin the courtof the prison.
