Now it came to passupon a day, that Jonathanthe sonof Saulsaiduntothe young manthat borehis armor, Come, and let us go overtothe Philistines' garrison, that is on the other side. But he toldnothis father. And Saultarriedin the uttermost partof Gibeahundera pomegranate treewhich is in Migron: and the peoplethat were withhim were about sixhundredmen; And Ahiah, the sonof Ahitub, Ichabod's brother, the sonof Phinehas, the sonof Eli, the LORD's priestin Shiloh, wearingan ephod. And the peopleknewnotthatJonathanwas gone. And betweenthe passages, by whichJonathansoughtto go overuntothe Philistines' garrison, there was a sharprockon the oneside, and a sharprockon the otherside: and the nameof the one was Bozez, and the nameof the otherSeneh. The forefrontof the one was situatednorthwardover againstMichmash, and the othersouthwardover againstGibeah. And Jonathansaidtothe young manthat borehis armor, Come, and let us go overuntothe garrisonof theseuncircumcised: it may be thatthe LORDwill workfor us: for there is norestraintto the LORDto saveby manyorby few. And his armorbearersaidunto him, Doallthat is in thine heart: turnthee; behold, I am withthee according to thy heart. Then saidJonathan, Behold, wewill pass overunto these men, and we will discover ourselvesuntothem. Ifthey saythusuntous, Tarryuntilwe cometoyou; then we will stand stillin our place, and will notgo upuntothem. But ifthey saythus, Come upuntous; then we will go up: forthe LORDhath deliveredthem into our hand: and this shall be a signunto us. And bothof them discovered themselvesuntothe garrisonof the Philistines: and the Philistinessaid, Behold, the Hebrewscome forthout ofthe holeswherethey had hid themselves. And the menof the garrisonansweredJonathanand his armorbearer, and said, Come uptous, and we will showyou a thing. And Jonathansaiduntohis armorbearer, Come upafterme: forthe LORDhath deliveredthem into the handof Israel. And Jonathanclimbed upuponhis handsand uponhis feet, and his armorbearerafterhim: and they fellbeforeJonathan; and his armorbearerslewafterhim. And that firstslaughter, whichJonathanand his armorbearermade, wasabout twentymen, within as it were a halfacreof land, which a yoke of oxen might plow . And there wastremblingin the host, in the field, and among allthe people: the garrison, and the spoilers, theyalsotrembled, and the earthquaked: so it wasa very greattrembling. And the watchmenof Saulin Gibeahof Benjaminlooked; and, behold, the multitudemelted away, and they wenton beating down one another . Then saidSaulunto the peoplethat were withhim, Numbernow, and seewhois gonefromus. And when they had numbered, behold, Jonathanand his armorbearer were not there . And Saulsaidunto Ahiah, Bring hitherthe arkof God. Forthe arkof Godwasat thattimewith the childrenof Israel. And it came to pass, whileSaultalkeduntothe priest, that the noisethat was in the hostof the Philistineswent onand increased: and Saulsaiduntothe priest, Withdrawthine hand. And Sauland allthe peoplethat were withhim assembled themselves, and they cametothe battle: and, behold, every man's swordwasagainst his fellow, and there was a verygreatdiscomfiture. Moreover the Hebrews that werewith the Philistinesbeforethat time, whichwent upwiththem into the camp from the country round about, even theyalso turned to bewiththe Israelitesthat were withSauland Jonathan. Likewise allthe menof Israelwhich had hid themselvesin mountEphraim, when they heardthatthe Philistinesfled, even theyalsofollowed hardafterthem in the battle. So the LORDsavedIsraelthatday: and the battlepassed overunto Beth-aven. And the menof Israelwere distressedthatday: for Saulhad adjuredthe people, saying, Cursed be the manthateateth any fooduntilevening, that I may be avengedon mine enemies. So noneof the peopletasted any food. And all they of the landcameto a wood; and there washoneyuponthe ground. And when the peoplewere comeintothe wood, behold, the honeydropped; but noman puthis handtohis mouth: forthe peoplefearedthe oath. But Jonathanheardnotwhen his fathercharged the people with the oath: wherefore he put forththe endof the rodthat was in his hand, and dippeditin a honeycomb, and puthis handtohis mouth; and his eyeswere enlightened. Then answeredoneof the people, and said, Thy fatherstraitly charged the people with an oath, saying, Cursed be the manthateateth any foodthis day. And the peoplewere faint. Then saidJonathan, My fatherhath troubledthe land: see, I pray you, howmine eyeshave been enlightened, becauseI tasteda littleof thishoney. How much more, if haplythe peoplehad eaten freelytodayof the spoilof their enemieswhichthey found? forhad there notbeen nowa much greaterslaughteramong the Philistines? And they smotethe Philistinesthatdayfrom Michmashto Aijalon: and the peoplewere veryfaint. And the peopleflewuponthe spoil, and tooksheep, and oxen, and calves, and slew them on the ground: and the peopledid eat them withthe blood. Then they toldSaul, saying, Behold, the peoplesinagainst the LORD, in that they eatwiththe blood. And he said, Ye have transgressed: rolla greatstoneuntome this day. And Saulsaid, Disperse yourselvesamong the people, and sayunto them, Bring me hitherevery manhis ox, and every manhis sheep, and slay them here, and eat; and sinnotagainst the LORDin eatingwiththe blood. And allthe peoplebroughtevery manhis oxwithhim that night, and slew them there. And Saulbuiltan altarunto the LORD: the same was the firstaltarthat he builtunto the LORD. And Saulsaid, Let us go downafterthe Philistinesby night, and spoilthem untilthe morninglight, and let us notleavea manof them. And they said, Dowhatsoeverseemethgoodunto thee. Then saidthe priest, Let us draw nearhitheruntoGod. And Saulasked counselof God, Shall I go downafterthe Philistines? wilt thou deliverthem into the handof Israel? But he answeredhim notthatday. And Saulsaid, Draw ye nearhither, allthe chiefof the people: and knowand seewhereinthis sinhath beenthisday. For, as the LORDliveth, which savethIsrael, thoughit bein Jonathanmy son, he shall surely die. But there was not a manamong allthe people that answeredhim. Then saidhe untoallIsrael, Beyeon oneside, and Iand Jonathanmy sonwill beon the otherside. And the peoplesaiduntoSaul, Dowhat seemethgoodunto thee. Therefore Saulsaiduntothe LORDGodof Israel, Givea perfect lot . And Sauland Jonathanwere taken: but the peopleescaped. And Saulsaid, Cast lots betweenme and Jonathanmy son. And Jonathanwas taken. Then SaulsaidtoJonathan, Tellme whatthou hast done. And Jonathantoldhim, and said, I did but tastea littlehoneywith the endof the rodthat was in mine hand, and , lo, I must die. And Saulanswered, Goddosoand morealso: forthou shalt surely die, Jonathan. And the peoplesaiduntoSaul, Shall Jonathandie, whohath wroughtthisgreatsalvationin Israel? God forbid: as the LORDliveth, there shall notone hairof his headfallto the ground; forhe hath wroughtwithGodthisday. So the peoplerescuedJonathan, that he diednot. Then Saulwent upfrom followingthe Philistines: and the Philistineswentto their own place. So Saultookthe kingdomoverIsrael, and foughtagainst allhis enemieson every side, against Moab, and against the childrenof Ammon, and against Edom, and against the kingsof Zobah, and against the Philistines: and whithersoeverhe turnedhimself, he vexed them . And he gathereda host, and smotethe Amalekites, and deliveredIsraelout of the handsof them that spoiledthem. Now the sonsof SaulwereJonathan, and Ishui, and Melchi-shua: and the namesof his twodaughters were these ; the nameof the firstbornMerab, and the nameof the youngerMichal: And the nameof Saul's wife was Ahinoam, the daughterof Ahimaaz: and the nameof the captainof his host was Abner, the sonof Ner, Saul's uncle. And Kish was the fatherof Saul; and Nerthe fatherof Abner was the sonof Abiel. And there wassorewaragainstthe Philistinesallthe daysof Saul: and when Saulsawanystrongman, or anyvaliantman, he tookhim untohim.
