Saulreignedoneyear; and when he had reignedtwoyearsoverIsrael, Saulchosehim threethousand men of Israel; whereof two thousandwerewithSaulin Michmashand in mountBethel, and a thousandwerewithJonathanin Gibeahof Benjamin: and the restof the peoplehe sentevery manto his tent. And Jonathansmotethe garrisonof the Philistinesthat was in Geba, and the Philistinesheard of it . And Saulblewthe trumpetthroughout allthe land, saying, Let the Hebrewshear. And allIsraelheardsay that Saulhad smittena garrisonof the Philistines, and that Israelalsowas had in abominationwith the Philistines. And the peoplewere called togetherafterSaulto Gilgal. And the Philistinesgathered themselves togetherto fightwithIsrael, thirtythousandchariots, and sixthousandhorsemen, and peopleas the sandwhich is onthe seashorein multitude: and they came up, and pitchedin Michmash, eastwardfrom Beth-aven. When the menof Israelsawthatthey were in a strait, ( forthe peoplewere distressed,) then the peopledid hide themselvesin caves, and in thickets, and in rocks, and in high places, and in pits. And some of the Hebrewswent overJordanto the landof Gadand Gilead. As for Saul, he was yetin Gilgal, and allthe peoplefollowedhim trembling. And he tarriedsevendays, according to the set timethatSamuel had appointed : but Samuelcamenotto Gilgal; and the peoplewere scatteredfromhim. And Saulsaid, Bring hithera burnt offeringtome, and peace offerings. And he offeredthe burnt offering. And it came to pass, that as soon as he had made an endof offeringthe burnt offering, behold, Samuelcame; and Saulwent outto meethim, that he might salutehim. And Samuelsaid, Whathast thou done? And Saulsaid, BecauseI sawthatthe peoplewere scatteredfromme, and that thoucamestnotwithin the daysappointed, and that the Philistinesgathered themselves togetherat Michmash; Therefore saidI, The Philistineswill come downnowuponme to Gilgal, and I have notmade supplicationuntothe LORD: I forced myselftherefore, and offereda burnt offering. And SamuelsaidtoSaul, Thou hast done foolishly: thou hast notkeptthe commandmentof the LORDthy God, whichhe commandedthee: fornowwould the LORDhave establishedthy kingdomuponIsraelforever. But nowthy kingdomshall notcontinue: the LORDhath soughthim a manafter his own heart, and the LORDhath commandedhim to be captainoverhis people, becausethou hast notkept that whichthe LORDcommandedthee. And Samuelarose, and got him upfromGilgalunto Gibeahof Benjamin. And Saulnumberedthe people that were presentwithhim, about sixhundredmen. And Saul, and Jonathanhis son, and the people that were presentwiththem, abodein Gibeahof Benjamin: but the Philistinesencampedin Michmash. And the spoilerscame outof the campof the Philistinesin threecompanies: onecompanyturneduntothe way that leadeth to Ophrah, untothe landof Shual: And anothercompanyturnedthe way to Beth-horon: and anothercompanyturned to the wayof the borderthat lookethtothe valleyof Zeboimtoward the wilderness. Now there was noblacksmithfoundthroughout allthe landof Israel: forthe Philistinessaid, Lestthe Hebrewsmake them swordsorspears: But allthe Israeliteswent downto the Philistines, to sharpenevery manhis share, and his colter, and his axe, and his mattock. Yet they hada filefor the mattocks, and for the colters, and for the forks, and for the axes, and to sharpenthe goads. So it came to passin the dayof battle, that there was neitherswordnor spearfoundin the handof anyof the peoplethat were withSauland Jonathan: but with Sauland with Jonathanhis sonwas there found. And the garrisonof the Philistineswent outtothe passageof Michmash.
