In thosedays there was nokingin Israel: and in thosedaysthe tribeof the Danitessoughtthem an inheritanceto dwellin; foruntothatday all their inheritancehad notfallenunto them amongthe tribesof Israel. And the childrenof Dansentof their familyfivemenfrom their coasts, menof valor, from Zorah, and from Eshtaol, to spy outthe land, and to searchit; and they saiduntothem, Go, searchthe land: who when they cameto mountEphraim, tothe houseof Micah, they lodgedthere. When they were bythe houseof Micah, theyknewthe voiceof the young manthe Levite: and they turned inthither, and saidunto him, Whobroughtthee hither? and whatmakestthouin this place ? and whathast thou here? And he saiduntothem, Thusand thusdealethMicahwith me, and hath hiredme, and I amhis priest. And they saidunto him, Ask counsel, we pray thee, of God, that we may knowwhether our waywhichwegoshall be prosperous. And the priestsaidunto them, Goin peace: beforethe LORD is your waywhereinye go. Then the fivemendeparted, and cameto Laish, and sawthe peoplethat were therein, how they dweltcareless, after the mannerof the Zidonians, quietand secure; and there was nomagistratein the land, that might put them to shamein any thing; and they were farfrom the Zidonians, and had nobusinesswith any man. And they cameuntotheir brethrento Zorahand Eshtaol: and their brethrensaidunto them, What say ye? And they said, Arise, that we may go upagainstthem: forwe have seenthe land, and, behold, it is verygood: and are yestill? be not slothfulto go, and to enterto possessthe land. When ye go, ye shall comeuntoa peoplesecure, and to a largeland: forGodhath givenit into your hands; a placewhere there is nowantof anythingthat is in the earth. And there wentfrom thenceof the familyof the Danites, out of Zorahand out of Eshtaol, sixhundredmenappointedwith weaponsof war. And they went up, and pitchedin Kirjath-jearim, in Judah: whereforethey calledthatplaceMahaneh-dan untothisday: behold, it is behindKirjath-jearim. And they passedthenceunto mountEphraim, and cameuntothe houseof Micah. Then answeredthe fivementhat wentto spy outthe countryof Laish, and saiduntotheir brethren, Do ye knowthatthere isin thesehousesan ephod, and teraphim, and a graven image, and a molten image? nowtherefore considerwhatye have to do. And they turnedthitherward, and cametothe houseof the young manthe Levite, even unto the houseof Micah, and salutedhim. And the sixhundredmenappointedwith their weaponsof war, which were of the childrenof Dan, stoodby the enteringof the gate. And the fivementhat wentto spy outthe landwent up, and came inthither, and tookthe graven image, and the ephod, and the teraphim, and the molten image: and the prieststoodin the enteringof the gatewith the sixhundredmen that were appointedwith weaponsof war. And thesewentinto Micah's house, and fetchedthe carved image, the ephod, and the teraphim, and the molten image. Then saidthe priestuntothem, Whatdoye? And they saidunto him, Hold thy peace, laythine handuponthy mouth, and gowithus, and beto us a fatherand a priest: is it betterfor thee to bea priestunto the houseof oneman, orthat thou bea priestunto a tribeand a familyin Israel? And the priest's heartwas glad, and he tookthe ephod, and the teraphim, and the graven image, and wentin the midstof the people. So they turnedand departed, and putthe little onesand the cattleand the carriagebeforethem. And when theywere a good wayfrom the houseof Micah, the menthat were in the housesnearto Micah's housewere gathered together, and overtookthe childrenof Dan. And they crieduntothe childrenof Dan. And they turnedtheir faces, and saidunto Micah, Whataileth thee, thatthou comest with such a company? And he said, Ye have taken awaymy godswhichI made, and the priest, and ye are gone away: and whathave I more? and what is this that ye sayuntome, Whataileth thee? And the childrenof Dansaiduntohim, Let notthy voicebe heardamongus, lestangryfellowsrunupon thee, and thou losethy life, with the livesof thy household. And the childrenof Danwenttheir way: and when Micahsawthatthey were too strongforhim, he turnedand went backuntohis house. And theytook the things whichMicahhad made, and the priestwhichhe had, and cameuntoLaish, untoa people that were at quietand secure: and they smotethem with the edgeof the sword, and burntthe citywith fire. And there was nodeliverer, becauseit was farfrom Zidon, and they had nobusinesswith any man; and itwas in the valleythat lieth by Beth-rehob. And they builta city, and dwelttherein. And they calledthe nameof the cityDan, after the nameof Dantheir father, whowas bornunto Israel: howbeitthe nameof the city was Laishat the first. And the childrenof Danset upthe graven image: and Jonathan, the sonof Gershom, the sonof Manasseh, heand his sonswereprieststo the tribeof Danuntilthe dayof the captivityof the land. And they set them upMicah's graven image, whichhe made, allthe timethat the houseof Godwasin Shiloh.
