This is a truesaying, If a mandesirethe office of a bishop, he desiretha goodwork. A bishopthenmustbeblameless, the husbandof onewife, vigilant, sober, of good behavior, given to hospitality, apt to teach; Notgiven to wine, nostriker, notgreedy of filthy lucre; butpatient, not a brawler, not covetous; One that rulethwellhis ownhouse, havinghis childreninsubjectionwithallgravity; ( Forifa manknownothow to rulehis ownhouse, howshall he take care ofthe churchof God?) Nota novice, lestbeing lifted up with pridehe fallintothe condemnationof thedevil. Moreoverhemusthavea goodreportofthem which are without; lesthe fallintoreproachandthe snareof thedevil. Likewise must the deacons be grave, notdoubletongued, notgivento muchwine, notgreedy of filthy lucre; Holdingthemysteryof thefaithina pureconscience. Andlet thesealsofirstbe proved; thenlet them use the office of a deacon, being found blameless. Even so must their wives be grave, notslanderers, sober, faithfulinall things. Let the deaconsbethe husbandsof onewife, rulingtheir childrenandtheir ownhouseswell. Forthey that have used the office of a deaconwellpurchaseto themselvesa gooddegree, andgreatboldnessinthe faithwhichis inChristJesus. These thingswriteI unto thee, hopingto comeuntotheeshortly: ButifI tarry long, thatthou mayest knowhowthou oughtestto behave thyselfinthe houseof God, whichisthe churchof the livingGod, the pillarandgroundof thetruth. Andwithout controversygreatisthemysteryof godliness: Godwas manifestinthe flesh, justifiedinthe Spirit, seenof angels, preacheduntothe Gentiles, believed oninthe world, received upintoglory.
