Hear, O Israel: Thou art to pass overJordanthis day, to go into possessnationsgreaterand mightierthanthyself, citiesgreatand fenced upto heaven, A peoplegreatand tall, the childrenof the Anakims, whomthouknowest, and of whom thouhast heard say , Whocan standbeforethe childrenof Anak! Understandtherefore this day, thatthe LORDthy God is hewhich goeth overbeforethee; as a consumingfireheshall destroythem, and heshall bring them downbefore thy face: so shalt thou drive them out, and destroythem quickly, asthe LORDhath saidunto thee. Speaknotthou in thine heart, after that the LORDthy Godhath cast them outfrom beforethee, saying, For my righteousnessthe LORDhath brought me into possessthisland: but for the wickednessof thesenationsthe LORDdoth drive them outfrom beforethee. Notfor thy righteousness, or for the uprightnessof thine heart, dost thougoto possesstheir land: butfor the wickednessof thesenationsthe LORDthy Goddoth drive them outfrom beforethee, and thathe may performthe wordwhichthe LORDsworeunto thy fathers, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Understandtherefore, thatthe LORDthy Godgiveththee notthisgoodlandto possessit for thy righteousness; forthou art a stiffneckedpeople. Remember, and forgetnot, howthou provokedstthe LORDthy Godto wrath in the wilderness: fromthe daythatthou didst departout of the landof Egypt, untilye cameuntothisplace, ye have beenrebelliousagainstthe LORD. Also in Horebye provokedthe LORDto wrath, so that the LORDwas angrywith you to have destroyedyou. When I was gone upinto the mountto receivethe tablesof stone, even the tablesof the covenantwhichthe LORDmadewithyou, then I abodein the mountfortydaysand fortynights, I neitherdid eatbreadnordrinkwater: And the LORDdelivereduntome twotablesof stonewrittenwith the fingerof God; and onthem was written according to allthe words, whichthe LORDspokewithyou in the mountout of the midstof the firein the dayof the assembly. And it came to passat the endof fortydaysand fortynights, that the LORDgaveme the twotablesof stone, even the tablesof the covenant. And the LORDsaiduntome, Arise, get thee downquicklyfrom hence; forthy peoplewhichthou hast brought forthout of Egypthave corrupted themselves ; they are quicklyturned asideout ofthe waywhichI commandedthem; they have madethem a molten image. Furthermore the LORDspokeuntome, saying, I have seenthispeople, and, behold, it is a stiffneckedpeople: Let me alone, that I may destroythem, and blot outtheir namefrom underheaven: and I will makeof thee a nationmightierand greaterthanthey. So I turnedand came downfromthe mount, and the mountburnedwith fire: and the twotablesof the covenant were inmy twohands. And I looked, and, behold, ye had sinnedagainst the LORDyour God, and had madeyou a moltencalf: ye had turned asidequicklyout ofthe waywhichthe LORDhad commandedyou. And I tookthe twotables, and castthem out ofmy twohands, and brokethem before your eyes. And I fell downbeforethe LORD, as at the first, fortydaysand fortynights: I did neithereatbread, nordrinkwater, because ofallyour sinswhichye sinned, in doingwickedlyin the sightof the LORD, to provoke him to anger. ForI was afraidofthe angerand hot displeasure, wherewiththe LORDwas wrothagainstyou to destroyyou. But the LORDhearkeneduntome at thattimealso. And the LORDwas very angrywith Aaronto have destroyedhim: and I prayedforAaronalsothe sametime. And I tookyour sin, the calfwhichye had made, and burntit with fire, and stampedit, and ground it very small, even untilitwas as smallas dust: and I castthe dustthereof intothe brookthat descendedout ofthe mount. And at Taberah, and at Massah, and at Kibroth-hattaavah, ye provokedthe LORDto wrath. Likewise when the LORDsentyou from Kadesh-barnea, saying, Go upand possessthe landwhichI have givenyou; then ye rebelled againstthe commandmentof the LORDyour God, and ye believedhim not, norhearkenedto his voice. Ye have beenrebelliousagainstthe LORDfrom the daythat I knewyou. Thus I fell downbeforethe LORDfortydaysand fortynights, asI fell down at the first ; becausethe LORDhad saidhe would destroyyou. I prayedtherefore untothe LORD, and said, O LordGOD, destroynotthy peopleand thine inheritance, whichthou hast redeemedthrough thy greatness, whichthou hast brought forthout of Egyptwith a mightyhand. Rememberthy servants, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; looknotuntothe stubbornnessof thispeople, nor totheir wickedness, nor totheir sin: Lestthe landwhencethou broughtest us outsay, Because the LORDwas not ableto bringthem intothe landwhichhe promisedthem, and because he hatedthem, he hath brought them outto slaythem in the wilderness. Yet they are thy peopleand thine inheritance, whichthou broughtest outby thy mightypowerand by thy stretched outarm.
