Know ye not, brethren, ( forI speakto them that knowthe law,) how thatthelawhath dominion overa manas long ashe liveth? Forthewomanwhich hath an husbandis boundby the lawto her husbandso long as he liveth; butifthehusbandbe dead, she is loosedfromthelawof her husband. Sothenif, while her husbandliveth, she be marriedto anotherman, she shall be calledan adulteress: butifher husbandbe dead, she isfreefromthat law; so that sheisnoadulteress, though she be marriedto anotherman. Wherefore, mybrethren, yealsoare become deadto thelawbythebodyof Christ; that yeshould be marriedto another, even to him who is raisedfromthe dead, thatwe should bring forth fruitunto God. Forwhenwe wereintheflesh, themotionsof sins, whichwere bythelaw, did workinourmembersto bring forth fruitunto death. Butnowwe are deliveredfromthelaw, that being deadwhereinwe were held; thatweshould serveinnewnessof spirit, andnot in the oldnessof the letter. Whatshall we saythen? Is thelawsin? God forbid. Nay, I had notknownsin, butbythe law: forI hadnotknownlust, exceptthelawhad said, Thou shalt notcovet. Butsin, takingoccasionbythecommandment, wroughtinmeall mannerof concupiscence. Forwithoutthe lawsin was dead. ForIwas alivewithoutthe lawonce: butwhen thecommandmentcame, sinrevived, andIdied. Andthecommandment, which was ordained tolife, Ifound to beuntodeath. Forsin, takingoccasionbythecommandment, deceivedme, andbyitslew me. Whereforethelaw is holy, andthecommandmentholy, andjust, andgood. Was thenthat which is goodmadedeathunto me? God forbid. Butsin, thatit might appearsin, workingdeathin mebythat which is good; thatsinbythecommandmentmight becomeexceedingsinful. Forwe knowthatthelawisspiritual: butIamcarnal, soldundersin. Forthat whichI doI allownot: forwhatI would, thatdoI not; butwhatI hate, thatdoI. IfthenI dothatwhichI wouldnot, I consentunto thelawthat it is good. Nowthenit is no moreIthat doit, butsinthat dwellethinme. ForI knowthatinme(that is, inmyflesh,) dwellethnogood thing: forto willis presentwith me; but how to performthat which is goodI findnot. Forthe goodthatI wouldI donot: butthe evilwhichI wouldnot, thatI do. NowifIdothatIwouldnot, it is no moreIthat doit, butsinthat dwellethinme. I findthena law, that, when Iwoulddogood, evilis presentwith me. ForI delightin thelawof Godaftertheinwardman: ButI seeanotherlawinmymembers, warring againstthelawof mymind, andbringing me into captivityto thelawof sinwhich isinmymembers. O wretchedmanthat Iam! whoshall delivermefromthebodyof thisdeath? I thankGodthroughJesusChristourLord. Sothenwith themindImyselfservethe lawof God; butwith thefleshthe lawof sin.
