ThenspakeJesusto themultitude, andto hisdisciples, Saying, ThescribesandthePhariseessitinMoses' seat: Allthereforewhatsoever they bidyouobserve, that observeanddo; butdonot ye aftertheirworks: for they say, anddonot. For they bindheavyburdensand grievous to be borne, andlay them onmen's shoulders; but they themselves willnotmovethem with one of theirfingers. Butalltheirworks they do for to be seen of men: they make broadtheirphylacteries, andenlargetheborders of theirgarments, Andlovethe uppermost roomsatfeasts, andthe chief seatsinthesynagogues, Andgreetingsinthemarkets, and to be calledofmen, Rabbi, Rabbi. But be notyecalledRabbi: foroneisyourMaster, even Christ; andallyearebrethren. Andcallno man yourfatherupontheearth: foroneisyourFather, which is inheaven. Neither be ye calledmasters: foroneisyourMaster, even Christ. But he that is greatest among you shall beyourservant. Andwhosoever shall exalthimself shall be abased; andhe that shall humblehimself shall be exalted. Butwoe unto you, scribesandPharisees, hypocrites! for ye shut upthekingdom of heavenagainstmen: foryeneither go in yourselves, neithersuffer ye them that are entering to go in. Woe unto you, scribesandPharisees, hypocrites! for ye devourwidows' houses, and for a pretence make long prayer: therefore ye shall receive the greaterdamnation. Woe unto you, scribesandPharisees, hypocrites! for ye compassseaandland to makeoneproselyte, andwhen he is made, ye makehim twofold more the child of hell than yourselves. Woe unto you, ye blindguides, which say, Whosoever shall swearbythetemple, it isnothing; butwhosoever shall swearbythegold of thetemple, he is a debtor! Ye foolsandblind: forwhetherisgreater, thegold, orthetemple that sanctifieththegold? And, Whosoever shall swearbythealtar, it isnothing; butwhosoeverswearethbythegiftthat is uponit, he is guilty. Ye foolsandblind: forwhether is greater, thegift, orthealtar that sanctifieththegift Whoso therefore shall swearbythealtar, swearethbyit, andby all thingsthereon. And whoso shall swearbythetemple, swearethbyit, andby him that dwelleth therein. And he that shall swearbyheaven, swearethbythethrone of God, andby him that sitteththereon. Woe unto you, scribesandPharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mintandaniseandcummin, and have omittedtheweightier matters of thelaw, judgment, mercy, andfaith: theseought ye to have done, and not to leave the otherundone. Ye blindguides, which strain at a gnat, andswallow a camel. Woe unto you, scribesandPharisees, hypocrites! for ye make cleantheoutside of thecupand of theplatter, butwithin they are fullofextortionandexcess. Thou blindPharisee, cleansefirstthat which is withinthecupandplatter, thattheoutside of them may becleanalso. Woe unto you, scribesandPharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like untowhitedsepulchers, whichindeedappearbeautifuloutward, but are within full of dead men's bones, and of alluncleanness. Even soyealsooutwardlyappearrighteous unto men, butwithin ye arefull of hypocrisyandiniquity. Woe unto you, scribesandPharisees, hypocrites! because ye buildthetombs of theprophets, andgarnishthesepulchers of therighteous, Andsay, If we had beeninthedays of ourfathers, we would not have beenpartakers with themintheblood of theprophets. Wherefore ye be witnesses unto yourselves, that ye are the children of them which killedtheprophets. Fill ye upthenthemeasure of yourfathers. Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can ye escapethedamnation of hell? Wherefore, behold, Isenduntoyouprophets, and wise men, andscribes: and some ofthem ye shall killandcrucify; and some ofthem shall ye scourgeinyoursynagogues, andpersecute them fromcitytocity: Thatuponyou may comeall the righteousbloodshedupontheearth, fromtheblood of righteousAbeluntotheblood of Zechariahson of Barachias, whom ye slewbetweenthetempleandthealtar. Verily I say unto you, All these things shall comeuponthisgeneration. O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killesttheprophets, andstonest them which are sentuntothee, how oftenwould I have gathered thy children together, even as a hengatherethherchickensunder her wings, and ye wouldnot! Behold, yourhouse is left unto youdesolate. For I say unto you, Ye shall notseemehenceforth, till ye shall say, Blessed is he that comethin the name of the Lord.
